Blue Smoke from exhaust

Featured Replies

Garage checked head gasket. Changed oil and filter. No loss of power. Engine flushed 2 weeks ago. Full service last week but first one for 3 years. Any ideas. Any help appreciated. Garage couldn’t find anything . Not all time but most times

Should also add that mpg is down since blue smoke

@Anon1066 Petrol or diesel engine? If it was a diesel I'd say bad glow plugs, particularly if the smoke smells of diesel fuel.

Otherwise, is the coolant level changing from "normal"? Is the oil level rising?

Glow plugs were changed about 6 months ago. Fluid levels are stable. Will check plugs. Thanks a lot

You say blue smoke, but that picture looks like white smoke to me?

Can you post a link to the video?

Thanks in advance for any help. Garage are stuck. I said blue but is it white? Mpg is also down

Blue = oil leaking from turnip or if it is the 1.4TSI I think piston rings were an issue.

White = probably coolant.

Definitely white. It the garage think that is blue, change your garage!

Thanks, as you can likely gather im the worst kind… “a google mechanic”. Tbf to the garage they said it didn’t smoke when they had it. It was me who said blue. It’s a reputable and not a cheap garage.

Where I look on google it says white smoke is coolant but the fluid level is not dropping. No obvious loss of power. Car starts fine. Idles okay. Starts fine. Lower MPG but this excessive smoke is an intermittent issue. At a loss?

Glowplugs would not cause that smoke working or otherwise under any circumstances.

Had the engine just been started? From cold or restarted from hot? Or was it up to full operating temperature?

I think it could be the result of an active DPF regen but could you please confirm what engine and fuel type your vehicle is? I am assuming diesel from your mention of glowplugs being replaced but some people confuse them with glowplugs and they are often those who fail to specify their engine type.

Blue smoke can often look like white on a video, steam can resemble smoke, I had the Pompiers attend when I had an electric boiler venting superheated steam, to a neighbour it was smoke.

It’s a 1.6 Diesel engine. Engine at full operating temperature. No smoke on start up. Only after driving. Thanks for interest

Looks like a DPF regen.

Definitely now the required info is known.

Nothing to be concerned about.

Thanks Guys. Been “nursing” the motor since smoking but will givenit a motorway blast to try and clear/reset DPF if that’s what it might be. Will update after a run

That amount of visible smoke isn’t normal. If it is something to do with a regen then it is dumping way too much diesel.

Fyi in case anyone gets a similar issue it’s a 1.6 Diesel Fabia, Monte Carlo 2013 plate.

And that's why this is not a DPF regeneration folks.

That's not regen, it's a dodgy injector, the VAG 1.6 is famous for killing injectors.
