Spare wheel kit

Featured Replies

I have a 2014 Octavia Elegance Estate Mk3 which has been great. However the tyre repair kit (Glue) has been a real pain. I have had 3 occasions when it was needed and in each case it failed miserably. I want to put a spare wheel (Not a space saver) in the boot recess and dispense with the useless glue.

I have been advised the Kit I require is ZGBBOM247SK  which has a 16" wheel and the 16” version is compatible with Octavia Mk3 with the 17” wheels I have. I suspect the reason for using the 16" wheel is in order for it to sit within the boot and not be proud.

What are the implications to me in terms of ride quality or is this effectively the same as a space saver limited to 50mph. I feel this is a fudge/compromise in order to fit the tyre/wheel into the base of the car so the floor fits level.

Can anyone share their experience of this and offer any advice

Reduce your speed anyway even if no sticker on the Emergency Spare wheel you have since it is a non matching wheel / tyre / size / compound / tyre pressure  to the other wheels on the car or on the other side on the same axle even if the circumference / total diameter is pretty close or even identical IMO.

Just think about it, and rest the TPMS when the spare is on and again when the correct tyre is fitted.

The "full-size" spare wheel isn't as "full-size" as the name implies.

The 16" wheel gives you a tyre size of 205/55 16", so likely have a different profile to your current tyres, which I assume are 225/45 17".

However the 18" space-saver wheel is 125/70 18", which is more like a bike tyre IMO. :D

I have the full-size spare wheel as I didn't fancy a space-saver, but this led me to a little regret when I thought I was carrying around additional weight that I could have saved if I'd got a space-saver.  However I found out the space-saver isn't muck of a weight-saving over the "full-size" spare, so there isn't really any benefit to the space-saver unless you have a vRS and need the brake clearance of the larger rim of the space-saver. It certainly doesn't save any space in your boot, and there's little to no weight saving with it either.

@ Anon in West Midlands, you have confirmed what I already thought. 😃

I am not really interested in the the 16" so called space saver spare option. I agree that the weight of it is a bind and the 50 mph speed restriction it imposes, not to mention the different tyre sizes 205/225 on the car. The better option is a full 17" spare wheel as in the good old days. It might weigh a bit more than the other options, but not much and I can be on my way at 70mph and have a replacement new tyre fitted, using the part worn as a spare .

The boot tyre recess is about 68 cm wide by 22 cm deep for a 225/45/R17 wheel as per the other 4 on the car.

Overall diameter of this wheel/tyre is 17" x 25.4 mm = 431.8 mm (wheel diameter) plus 225 x 0.45 = 101.3 mm x 2 = 202.6 mm (Tyre wall height top/bottom) = 634.4 mm

This gives me 4.6cm to play with on the tyre width lying down and 0-5cm over in the depth potentially fouling the shelf, which I can live with.

I know you've measured it, but do make sure the tyre will fit without intruding into your boot space? The wheel and tyre will be a bit bigger than the 16" "full size" so do check before you buy a spare wheel that doesn't fit. You can try this easily enough, by simply removing one of your existing wheels and trying it for size.

Also where will you keep the other stuff that goes with it? The polystyrene insert has slots for wheel lock key, jack, some little L-shaped widget, the bolt cap remover tool, the bolt-wrench, the towing eye and probably something else that I can't remember. (Oh in my case, also a couple of wheel hanger pins. Very handy! https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B09WV5WLJ8)

Without the correct insert, what is your storage solution for those items?

Good luck!

As you can see in the chart below, there might only be 5mm difference in the inflated tyre width between a 205/55R16 and 225/45R17.

The "205" and "225" marked on the sidewall is just the nomimal width of the tyre. The actual width of the inflated tyre always depends on the rim width to which it is fitted.

Notice that if 205/55R16 and 225/45R17 are both fitted to a 7J rim, the 205 tyre is actually wider than the 225 tyre.

Actual width of inflated tyre

205/55R16 fitted to 6.5J rim 214mm

205/55R16 fitted to 7J rim 220mm

225/45R17 fitted to 7J rim 219mm

225/45R17 fitted to 7.5J rim 225mm

That's good to know. 👍

I was just looking out for Markie to make sure he didn't buy a tyre that didn't fit.
