Which (cheap) obd scanner is better?

Featured Replies

Hi. I have a 2010 Superb 2.0 diesel estate(170hp). I've been looking to get an OBD scanner on a budget.

Best two I've come to read about seem to be Carista(which I understand will cost me yearly subscription). The other one is Autel AP200, which comes with free software for one car brand(so no yearly subscription)

Any advice on which one would have more/better functions?

I just bought a Carista adapter for £23 on amazon.

As you say, literally everything is locked behind the subscription.

You cannot even read PCodes, it just tells you the number of faults in each ECU.

So it's basically worthless without a subscription.

Adding in the subscription price £70 in total for 12 months, I say it's better to get an OBD11 adapter as this is only slightly more and offers more functionality and better community for adaptations.

However if you are only interested in a basic OBD scanner (read DTCs, Clear DTCs) then I don't think it's worth paying for a subscription at all.

There should be plenty of alternatives for around £25-£30 that would do this without on going costs.

I bought the ELM327 OBD2 Bluetooth interface on eBay for about £5.  Using it with the Car Checker app after 1.5 hours it has only reached code 6 of 198 codes.

As the ignition needs to remain on to work it's insecure to leave the key in the ignition longer.

Can anyone suggest an App that works better or a different OBD product that reads all the codes quickly?
