Rear Registration Plate Screws & Inserts?

Featured Replies

Hello folks,

I thought i'd ask here as usually the answers are a lot better than the ones from the FB groups.

I recently removed the registration plate on my Mk1 vRS to do some repairs to the paintwork behind it.
It was sat in a plate holder and in turn it was screwed into the bootlid holes with some self tappers.
After repairing the paintwork i've attempted to re-attach the plates with new plate holders but it looks like the screws that were originally holding it in are either not quite long enough, or the holes have stripped out.

Can anyone tell me the following please.

1) What screws / bolts should be used to hold it in? Size, length, thread etc.
2) Are the inserts that hold the plates in, replaceable? If so, how big a job is it to replace them, and what's needed?

Many thanks.

I did away with the original metal threaded inserts and used the yellow plastic nuts and bolts. I put a rubber washer on each bolt behind the plate to help keep things sealed as the insert holes are hexagon shaped and bigger than the plastic bolt shanks. Had to drill out the holes in the number plate to a suitable size (6mm). You have to remove the tailgate plastic trim for access to get the nuts on of course.

The part number of the original threaded inserts is N 90479203. I think I had to drill mine out as they are a rivet. I don't know what tool is used to rivet them. Maybe a Rivnut tool will work but I am not sure. Screw size is M5.

I believe some models may have an alternative plastic clip....

 Thanks for this!
This idea sounds the best for me i think maybe. Did you use o rings as a type of washer, or something more specific? Did you put one on both sides as well?

No problem 🙂

I just used some flat rubber washers that I had lying around, I think they were tap washers. I put one on each bolt on the outer side against the back of the number plate, but I guess putting them inside the boot lid would be ok too if you wanted to. You could also double them up if there's enough plastic bolt length.

...maybe the rubber washers that fall off when the door trim clips break too. Or come in a pack with the replacements?
