Automatic Gearboxes - Are they good? Are there any problems? Advice needed.

Hi all, new here. I signed up as I'm pondering buying a 2013 1.2 automatic (100k miles/150km) over here in Ireland. I've seen a couple of things online about dsg issues (I think that's the correct term for the automatic gearbox in this model of Skoda?) and wondered if there's any experiences you could share that might clarify whether I should steer clear of them in this vintage or whether it looks like a pretty reliable prospect. 

 

I'm not very knowledgeable about engines really, though I can just about manage an oil change 😐 Thanks!

Is it a Mk2 or Mk3 Octavia you're looking at?

 

I would imagine it'll have the DQ200 seven speed dry clutch DSG.  More of an automated manual than an automatic.  We have the DQ200 in our Polo and it's been faultless over 49,000 miles.

 

The DQ200 from that era had an issue with the fluid in its transmission.  A Service Campaign '34H5' was initiated to rectify the matter. @ toot (amended-ish to avoid any confusion) might be able to provide further info on this.

 

You can search 34H5 on here and find plenty of reading material.  I'd be wary if the car you're looking at hasn't had the SC applied to it.

The 1.2tsi and consequentially the transmission is not a combination that is talked about much on here. Many on here may not be as familiar with it as compared to the other bigger volume combinations.   Take from that what you will.

 

As @Gazpoints out, there was an oil change campaign on the dq200. There have been problems with mechatronics failures, clutch packs wear more quickly than the wet type.  Some people see no problems though.

 

Overall, if it is the 7sp dry clutch dq200 in the 1.2tsi,  i'd say they have proven less reliable than dq250 6sp wet clutch dsg, but that doesn't mean you'll definitely have a problem.

 

The reference tag should be to @tootin previous poster comments I believe.  

The Oil change and software Recall Action does not apply here, that is '34F7' and 2009-2012, Summer break..

 

This is a 2013 so, 

'34H5' started on 2017 on some from 2013-2015, a software update as a preventative against the heat / pressure issue that caused,cracks, leaks, accumulator failures.

Hi gaz it's mk2. Does that mean it has dq200 clutch? I looked on Google but could find no answers.

Was the 34H5 recall on all Octavias from 2013 or just the mk3 Octavias and not the mk2 ones? I'm looking at a mk2. 

The recall was on some DQ200,s built from 2013-2015 fitted to what ever car and it was in Europe and in other parts of the world and started in 2017 and again twice in Australia.

There should be a record of it having been done, or not required.

The point is that this is just a software update, it is not '34F7' which was when the Synthetic oil was changed to mineral and a software update.

 

Done or not done is neither here nor there on a 10 year old car.  What matters is does it work well now. 

Needing replacement clutch packs is more likely to be what would be an issue.

Right. Is a clutch pack the same as a clutch kit/set? That's what came up when I googled replacement clutch pack. Seems to be a wide range in pricing as well eg on this website (85e-460e), so presumably not all one and the same thing.

If I took the car to a mechanic for a once-over due to my very(!) limited knowledge, would they be able to tell if it needed a replacement clutch pack? Is that a straightforward thing to look for do you know?

If the car drives OK then it drives OK.

I was just pointing out if there was to be a future expense that is what it could be with a DQ200 DSG.

 

You can not buy a car and then get your nickers in a twist over every potential issue.  Even brand new cars can have faults come time.
