Engine noise after topping car

Featured Replies

I thought I asked asked this already but I cold not find a thread. When my car is turned off and I get out at home, sometimes, the engine makes a loud noise for a couple of minutes? Like there was a loud fan going under the bonnet. I wanted to confirm that this is normal?

Don't worry, they all do it.

It's just the car managing it temperature.

That's a relief! Ta. I never knew about this and never saw it in my Passats, must be something that was added 2010+

Is it a diesel? Could be doing a regen.

Sounds very much like a regen not completing.  @boardtc What sort of journeys do you do and can you confirm if its diesel or petrol?

To elaborate: If it doesn't complete a regeneration cycle (regen) it will clog up the DPF and cause issues.  You need to be getting the DPF (diesel particulate filter) in the exhaust hot enough for long enough to clear it.  A 30 min blast on the motorway a couple of times a month should be enough to maintain it.  If it's already in a bad way then you'll need to really go nuts and get the exhaust nice and hot for a good while.  Maybe drive it hard for a couple of hours with good fuel in it to see what it does.

2.0 diesel. This happens not every time, but regularly. The other day it was after a 10k drive back from the school. I've driven in for 5 or 6 100-150k journeys in the last month. I don't remember it making noise at the end of the long ones. But I will may more attention now. It might be an issue so?
