Propshaft damper breaking up

Featured Replies

Hi All,

When I was doing the Haldex oil change the other week, I noticed that there was a large ring on the end of the propshaft, near the nose of the rear diff.  It was bonded to a rubber insert (or at least, it was originally)!  The rubber had seriously deteriorated.  I'm guessing this is some sort of torsion damper?  Do all 4x4 Kodias have them, or just the DSG ones?  Bit surprised that the car has only done 44,000 mies and this is all but dead.   Does anyone have a part number, please?  (Or a source for them)?

What you believe to be deterioration is most likely the moulded in "decoupling" slots, you should be able to move the outer annulus fore and aft with some effort and also twist it diagonally but not be able to rotate it more than a couple of degrees.

The new one is likely to be exactly the same, mine is still on the garage shelf

Probably in perfect health.

Thanks, I'll try to get some photos, but the cracks look far too irregular to be deliberate, I think!  I can practically pull the annulus off with my bare hands!  (Not that I've tried too hard, until I can source a replacement)!

Genuine Skoda retail price is eye-widening.

That certainly looks like it!  Many thanks.  Even that's £200!  Also looks suspiciously like there's one at the other end too.  I'd better check that...😒

Can't understand it.  That car has led an absolutely charmed life (since we bought it, just coming up to 3 years old, at least)!  Mrs. Avocet drives it like a mobility scooter - and not many miles, either.

They are irregular to a casual glance especially when covered in road dirt but they are actually a sinusoidal waveform.

My coupling cost €80 but I had to shop around.

If you can really pull it off with your hands as opposed to misinterpreting the necessary decoupling of an NVH damper then pull it away and disc cut it off, the car will still drive perfectly, the outer ring plays no part in the power transmission and I bet you my house there is no deterioration of the inner drive coupling.

If the ring really is going to seperate you dont want that to happen when you are driving, it will sound like Notre Dame!!!

No harmonic damper at the other end but there is a centre bearing in a rubber mount, worth checking this while you are there but again do not be fooled by some degree of relatively free movement, like the Guibo coupling it is that way by design, it has to be to function.

Evening all.  I finally managed to get under it this weekend and get a couple of photos and a video clip...

I wont be able to check until I return to Bergerac but the U split in front of your finger and the two flat portions either side are normal and present in a new coupling, I'm not sure about the irregular bits beyond it though without seeing my new one.

I will also check the one on my vehicle, perhaps the moulded in gap has extended into cracks as yours appears to have.

I will get back to you within a week.
