Replacing the connector to gearbox reverse light switch

Featured Replies

Good afternoon all.

We've had our '06 Fabia Mk1 1.2 12-valve Sport (petrol) for nearly 4 years and we've managed to cope with most things  (list available on request 😉) until now. It's our first Skoda and first VAG car although I had a VW polo as a company car in '79.

Both reverse lights have stopped working at the same time. The bulbs are good (swapped with fog light bulbs). The old switch tested good for continuity when the plunger was pressed but switch was replaced (for elimination purposes) and the fuse is new (also for elimination). A test light works when the fuse openings are probed. A staple in the connector to the switch didn't light the bulbs with ignition on. The test light doesn't light when connected between staple and ground. BUT the lights come on when the staple is connected to battery +ve. Conclusion; a break in the wire between fused supply and switch to lights wire is good.

Am I on the right track here?

Can I get a connector and attached length of wire to splice into the supply wires from e.g. Ebay? Does the connector have a proprietary name (e.g. Hella) to identify the connector?

Any other comments you've got for me?

TIA

There will be a 9-character part number on the connector housing.

Put that in ebay search box and hope for results including wire-tailed connectors.

Found it for you, housing is 1J0 973 702.

Wires with crimped pins both ends to fit it are part number 000 979 131 E, but I think you'll find ebay listings with wires pre-fitted.

Got it!  Call off the dogs!

Many thanks for your input @Breezy_Pete

Situation complicated by the original connector being smashed (not by me) and everything covered in an oily layer of perhaps contact adhesive. It's 'orrible.

All fixed now.

I poked around in a compartment under the battery until I found the 2 wires to the reverse lights switch and the fused supply from the ignition. I dragged the wires one at a time up through the plastic tube into the compartment under the battery and soldered and shrink-wrapped the wires to my new connector which had had its wires extended with a 2-core cable.

Few will be surprised to hear that the ignition-switched feed wire to the switch had broken next to the old connector.

Again, I am indebted to @Breezy_Pete for this successful outcome.
