Snow tyres and chains

Featured Replies

New member here, wondering if the forum can help.

I have a 2023 Octavia, replacing an old faithful 2015 Octavia.

We travel to Austria to ski every xmas and the previous car had a set of 205/55 R16 konig  easyfit chains (highly recommended). Thing is, the new car sits on 205/60 R16 as standard and the old chains don't fit. I'm just about to order a set of steel wheels + winter tyres and I'm wondering  I can safely order and run 205/55 R16 winter tyres with the old chains. I'm sure my speedo will be out slightly but I mostly confirm in kph via gps anyway.

Welcome.

What size does it say in the owners manual for the Tyre Size for suitable for using snow chains.

In the manual it says that 205/60/R16 and 205/55/R17 are suitable for mounting snow chains but I think that is just from a clearance point of view. Obviously slightly smaller diameter wheels will be less likely to foul anything.

As it is when you measure around the circumference of a Snow or All Season (3 peak) tyre the sizes can be very different from what you might see from the Sizes on a Side Wall or calculator.

Easy of chains on and off is important as you will know and it is not just the chains on it is chains on and clogged up and lack of clearance that matters

& then arches / wheel wells that get filled with frozen snow / slush. .

I've found a good deal on some new easy-fit chains for the officially recommended tyre size so I'm going with them.
