Retrofit of the steering wheel

Featured Replies

Good afternoon. My steering wheel is not heated from the factory. Are there any successful cases of retrofitting such a steering wheel?
Thank you.

I bought a heated steering wheel with capacitive sensors. I'll remove the airbag from my steering wheel. I now have a switch unit with adaptive cruise installed from the Kostal company. Googling shows that the block 5Q1953507DFIGI should suit me. But alas, I can’t check this using my VIN code. Who has adaptive cruise and a heated steering wheel - can you see what steering column unit you have installed?

Hi all! Continuation of a story. The missing parts arrived and I started making wiring.

Add a terminal in the fusebox instead of bodging with a fuse tap . It isn't difficult and it'll result in a factory finish (and make it less likely to catch the eye of a dealer tech)  🙂

I thought about it. This is a good point. Thank you.

Hello. I installed everything and everything works.

  • 2 months later...

well done.

I am actually looking for a steering wheel with capacitive functionality as mine has a defective capacitive module, but I am afraid to pull the trigger as I know the beginning of the production those units were defective, just like mine is... anybody has any idea after what year of steering wheel production it is safe to buy a used one?

Hello.  KLR emulators are sold on Aliexpress.  This is a solution for steering wheels whose sensors have stopped working.

Which one of these would support heating and travel assist but NOT a rear wiper? Thanks.

Hello. I found such a table. I don’t know how correct it is, but in my case everything coincided. If you need a heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise, but you don’t have a wiper on the back door, then you need a unit:

Sorry if I get into this discussion now, in a steering wheel purchased online, the heating cable is severed.  Basically I would have to find a plug like this and solder it back to the wires.

Do you know if it is possible to find it?

From what I've read in a Russian TPI (can't find the link, sorry), you need a wheel with software version 22 or higher on the control unit for the capacitive sensors. All of the ones I've seen for sale second hand are SW19 or SW20. The latest production date I've seen on those wheels was December 2021, so you'll definitely want something later than that.

On the other hand, I also read that this issue is now addressed by updating the software/firmware on the A5 camera, rather than by replacing the steering wheel (I think the system is then able to filter out and ignore the anomalous inputs from the sensors). If your steering wheel was factory fit, you could probably just ask a dealer to do that update for you.
