Is an oil change after running in a good idea or unnecessary?

Manufacturing processes, matching of toleranced components and oil technology have made great advances over the last 20 years.

It is a good idea in principle, deemed unnecessary by the manufacturer as they do not schedule one. If the manufacturer wanted to be pedantic they could say that the vehicle has not been serviced according to their schedule.

Then why don't Skoda recommend it? :confused: Some other (performance) marques use thinner "running in" oil which needs changing around the 1k mark for the normal service interval oil, but I think for most normal cars, the 10k interval is fine! :D

Not neccesary, I found it hard to believe at first but its true. Our octy tdi on variable servicing had its first change at 28000 miles, now on 114000 & still running fine & only uses 1/2 litre of oil between services

In the manual for my CTR its says not to change the oil until the first service (12.5k miles or 12 months) as this would prevent the engine bedding in properly.

Honest John in the DT pointed some time ago that manufacturers reccomendations were not altruistic. Oil may last >10k miles, engines may be constructed to the highest standards but the manufacturers make money from replacement engines as well.

On my vRS I did oil changes at 2,500 & 5,000 miles, and do an oil change at 5,000 in between services. It's not cheap, but if I get another 20k of driving it's worth it :thumbup:

The oil in my CTR has only been changed per the service shedule (every 12.5k) and now at 42k miles its running better than ever. Honda must be confident as it comes with a 90k mile warrenty.

Although i do agree that regular oil changes at shorter intervals will increase the life of the engine. I just don't keep cars that long for it to be worth it.

The oil was changed on my VRS after 3,000 miles and 12 months. I personaly don't like the sound of extended service intervals. Manufacturers do this to reduce the lease cost of a vehicle (ie. lease companies benefit greatly from reduced servicing costs and lost revenue - while servicing is taking place). Manufacturers don't car what happens after 3 years. I would think that 10,000 miles (or 12 months) is about right for an oil change.

On my old RS I used to get it serviced every 10k and I used to use the long life oil (for the variable / extended service option). Ran fine and never used any oil in the 30 months and 140k miles I owned it. Mind you, the long life oil was pretty gunky after 10k. The current diesel is on variable servicing - about every 25 - 30k between services - it uses about 1-2 litres between services.
