Squeak from brakes

Featured Replies

I'm getting a high pitch squeek from the nearside rear on my Y reg vRS, it is more noticable at low speeds and goes away if I press the brake pedal but the breaks are not making a grinding sound when using them.

I've looked at the disc and its not being scoured so doesn't look like a wear pad but the disc is getting hot so I think somethings rubbing. Has anyone else experienced this sort of thing, is it the pad wearing out or what? I hope its nothing serious it will the 3rd thing that's gone wrong in as many weeks! 1st was a broken front nearside coil spring and then the cover under the engine and inside wheel arches broke.

I'm just guessing here but warped disk, and what sort of condition are the wheel bearing in?

Also don't forget than the inside pad wears quicker than the outside one so you would want to look at that side of the disk/pad not the side you can see through the wheel.

Sounds like one of warped disc, siezed sliding caliper (if the vRS has sliding calipers that is), or backplates in need of lubrication.

Mine did that (TDi) turned out to be the inner pads wearing down to the backing plate .. the grinding noise only occured when the metal backing plate had contacted the slight lip on the outer edge of the disc (outer pads still had about 6mm left on it)

Mine does it when turning right only, worse when the disc is hot. Its getting slowly worse and is now that bad that SWMBO noticed it. Pads are fine, discs are fine (clocked with a DTI and found them to be true), greased the caliper slider, taken the thing to bits, cleaned everything, greased where required - yet it still does it

I can stop mine by lifting the handbrake very slightly (only one click)

Its all a bit strange, 40k service is due in about 2k time so booked it in to have the squeak looked at, serviced and they have also said that Cam Belts are advised to be changed every 4 years so having that done too

Just popped into town and it squeeked quite a lot. One click on the handbrake solved/hid the issue but the car beeped at me for driving with the handbrake on

Please keep us updated if your dealer manages to solve it - my local independant failed on 2 occasions, so have I.

Well try and remember Goochie, I don't come on here as much as I used too, my car attention has been changed with a VW T25 camper that I've got these days.

I have a very similar problem that I posted in a thread before.

Occasionaly I will get a deafining sqeal from the FNS wheel which goes away when the brakes are applied.

Mentioned it to the dealer - they took the brakes apart and they couldn't find anything wrong.

Just living with it for now because it only happens once a week if that.

Given mine goes when i apply the handbrake slightly I may adjust the handbrake cable to tighten it and make it go away until SWMBO notices it again ;)

Squeaking brakes were the pads, they had started to damage the discs but nothing major.

Hmm. Pads seemed to be OK - will have to think about changing them anyway
