Scrapping my superb šŸ˜©

Recommended Posts

I think it may be time to say goodbye to the old girl due to my previous post about the oil pump failure. I'm devastated as shes only just had a clutch and flywheel last year, the timing done 4k miles ago and a DPF delete last month. With her being the elegance model she had full heated leathers etc all working, fsh and 9 month mot. I'm just wondering if anyone on here would be interested in making me an offer for her before I scrap her in. I'm located in Tyne & Wear.Ā

Looks a nice car, no wonder you don't want to scrap it.Ā  Oil pump balance shaft - have you tried KMBPartsDirect in Sheffield, they supplied mine about 5 years ago?Ā  Mine was replaced at 50,000 miles, as a precaution to 'future proof' it.Ā  I took it to an engine specialist in Darwen for the work to be done, not wishing to trust the work to a local garage.Ā  They said that the old hexagon part was already showing early signs of wear.Ā  The garage in Darwen had a works car Passat which had had a new balance shaft and so this oil pump went into more than one VAG model, so if you cannot get a shaft from KMB there may be one in another VAG model being stripped for parts.Ā  One final caveat - not wishing to be a wet blanket - but from what I have read, before the oil pump fails completely, they may have been slipping for years without triggering theĀ  pressure warning light.Ā  I have read that some owners had the oil pump repaired only to find that there was damage elsewhere in the engine.Ā  Not sure if there is anything you can do to check this, might be just a matter of biting the bullet.Ā  Good luck.Ā

Yeah, she's been a lovely car, (when she's behaved herself of course!) I'll be very sad to see her go, especially because of all the work she's had done in the past year.Ā

But, like you say, unfortunately I don't know what excess damage has been done to the engine with the oil pump failing. My turbo and cams could have taken a battering and I would be paying hundreds to try and fix an unfixable engine!Ā

It just such a shame because apart from the obvious issues there's a load of salvageable parts!Ā

Cest la vie eh?! šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļøšŸ™ƒ

Looks almost identical to my old V6TDI. Ā Just checked and it's not been MOT'd since 2021, so I guess it's dedderedĀ šŸ˜¢

Ā

What about dropping in a known good engine from a scrapper? And maybe having proactive work done like @CarloskiĀ did, before fitting it?

Ā

Just a thought.

Edit: Same blue as well by the look of it;

Once mine stopped depreciating I was happy to spend what I saved on the car, whatever it needed.Ā  5 years ago the turbo was developing 5% over pressure - 'that's nothing' said the garage, but try telling that to the driver behind when I suddenly go into limp mode when accelerating to join the motorway.Ā  It was an accident waiting to happen.Ā  So I had a brand new Garrett turbo fitted (Ā£1000+) and when it was road tested it blew up and sent oil down the exhaust (I think new turbo must have been dropped somewhere along the way).Ā  Exhaust was stripped and cleaned but still dripped oil so garage gave me option of professional clean at their expense or new exhaust at half price, I opted for the latter - another Ā£1000+.Ā  So to fix something that was 'nothing' cost me over Ā£2000.Ā  Ā But all's well that ends well, or so they say!

Yeah Gaz, looks exactly the same. That blue always was the best colour in my humble opinion!! Lol.

Ā

I just can't justify spending money I don't really have on trying to fix something that I can't guarantee can even be fixed.Ā

My mechanic has told me he thinks the best thing I can do now is cut my losses and try and get as much back out of the car as I can before I weigh it in.Ā

It's just having the resources available to break it myself, which is something I don't really have, so that's why I popped it on here incase any other mk1 owners need anything off this one or would even want the whole car as a donor car.Ā

Ā

Be nice if parts of her could live on!Ā

Ā£1000 for a half price exhaust šŸ˜Æ

Ā

I must live in a different world.

Guessing it was stainless and not quite standard.

Ā

Either way, I wouldnā€™t scrap it, but I would look to repair it.

Ā

Weā€™ve had a 20 year old ā€œbangerā€ on the drive that cost Ā£25 to service, one expensive MOT at Ā£700, a full service with every filter, HT sparks the lot for Ā£100 and most MOT costing zero with a couple of sub Ā£200.

Ā

So 7 years Ā£1100 for MOT/fixes plus Ā£300 in services, or Ā£200 a year average. Thatā€™s very cheap in my books and far cheaper than a replacement car on finance.

Ā

If youā€™re looking to EV and get get one cheaply sure, but I still would get a price to fix.

And would be far less than that if you were in a position to do the repairs and servicing yourself.

Ā

The garage costs I read on this forum scare the heck out of me, more so by the fact they seem to be normalised and accepted by the majority.

Ā

In the last week I have seen Ā£2800 to replace a clutch slave cylinder, Ā£1200 to flush and replace anti-freeze and this Ā£1000 half price exhaust.
