Skoda rapid tyres

Featured Replies

I bought a Skoda rapid spaceback 1.6tdi and it was fitted with 205/50 r16 tyres the wheel part is 5 JA601025A. I've just hit something on the motorway which destroyed the alloy and tyre. So ordered a wheel off eBay and was looking at tyres and the size fitted doesn't seem to be a Skoda size. Is this an okay size to use? Or am I better off replacing to a different size?

Thank you for any help on this

Almost certainly not, but as you've not said what size wheel and tyre you bought...

The correct size is 215/45 16, but this is a less common tyre size and therefore a bit more expensive; some people switch to other sizes to save money or to get a wider choice of tyres.

According to an online tyre calculator your smaller tyre would increase wheel diameter by 1.88%, and change your speed by the same amount. Personally I think that's OK, but what I would not be OK with is mixing tyre sizes - I would stick with what you have or change all 4 - £££.

Sorry for the slow reply. Do I need XL tyres or just normal with this car? It's a 1.6tdi rapid spaceback

Sorry I didn't explain myself very well. I was going to buy a new tyre for the new wheel when it arrived but I was concerned that the tyres already fitted to my car don't match with anything that comes up when I do a tyre search or the filler cap info. I currently have 205/50/16 fitted to the car. So I was checking that this is an okay size to have on the car.

It's probably best to fit tyres with a load index of at least 84 (500kg) to the Rapid.

The tyre sizes that you might consider fitting to the Rapid include 185/60R15, 185/65R15 195/55R15, 195/60R15, 195/50R16, 195/55R16, 205/50R16, 215/45R16. All of these tyre sizes have a Standard Load index of at least 84 (500kg), so you don't need XL tyres in these sizes.

If you were to consider 17" tyres such as 215/40R17, then that might be best as an XL tyre. However, most tyres in that size are XL. The Standard Load index of the 215/40R17 tyre size is less than 84 (500kg), ie. 83 (487kg).

15" tyres are often much cheaper than 16" tyres, and you can get a noticeably better ride because of the higher sidewalls.

Price comparison of some 15" and 16" tyre sizes that you might consider fitting to a Rapid
