Amundsen Radio Replacement

Featured Replies

Hi

2017 Yeti info needed please.

In preparation for replacing my factory fitted Amundsen radio, satnav, Bluetooth, Dab unit in the new year.

Yesterday I took it out to check out the connections, so that I'll be sure to have all I need when installing the new unit.

I still not 100% sure what unit this will be. Still shopping around, and whilst most sellers have been very helpful, there is a reluctance by some to send a picture of the BACK of their units so that I can identify what goes where when I fit it.

Can I please ask you to positively identify the 4 plugs/leads as pictured.

I want to be sure that I am able to reconnect these 4 plugs in particular to their correct locations on the new unit.

I've also attached a picture of the main connector, which I presume will be just fitted to a simple adaptor plug, which, as on most radios will come in the standard kit.

I have fitted many radios in the past, but not one as modern as this, so just being careful!

By the way. I know I can get the screen issue fixed, but I don't want to do that.

Thanks for your help. 😉 😉 and a Very Happy Christmas and New Year to you all.

Keith

If you look on the internet you will find there is a colour coding for the bayonet type connectors which will identify what they are, if you see the same colours on the proposed new radio unit then you should be safe.

In any case the resource will tell you which function for each connector.

Thanks very much JR.

I've done that, and got the information. Very helpful. I can now at least go to the shop with the info I have, and find out what will and won't be suitable. Big Thanks.

Here for anyone else

Black : dab

White : FM

Blue : gps

Pink : picture feed

Yellow : USB

Not quite sure what Picture Feed (red) is... There's no red connector on this Amundsen unit of mine.

I have a recollection that despite the connectors being standardised some of them have a polarising tang visible on the photo and I think one of my loom connectors would not plug in beside the metal plate (look at the blue one in the photo) as the indent was in a different radial position, overcome with a bit of bodgery and IIRC I also bought some compatible connectors.

Hi again JR.

Yes, I noticed that when I removed the existing unit yesterday.

In all honesty my wife and I have pretty well made the decision that we'll just fit a bog standard decent make of car stereo.  We don't need or use the steering wheel controls, we have a screen mounted Garmin satnav which is a dream to use and update, and also from a safety angle means we're not having to look down, and so it's very likely that I'll only use the AERIAL and USB sockets anyway. DAB reception is not good in this area, and so we won't need GPS anyway.

I'll check out what's available in the New Year. There's no rush

Thanks again. Keith.

Just for now Keith, why not fit a new Touch Screen Digitizer For VW Skoda MIB2 MIB STD2 Radio Multimedia Navi 6.5''

eBay item number:384454830977 £23.40
With radio removed it's just an easy 30 minute job.
At least you will get a few months more out of it.

Thanks for this.

I had considered that option, but it's not for me. To be honest this infotainment unit has too many x's and not enough +'s to persuade me to keep it.

In all honesty I've lost confidence in car touch screens.

The unit came with the car in 2017, and was basically a freebie in the Yeti Drive model.

We won't be selling the car, so I'm going to get a certified local radio fitter to install a Kenwood radio. Although I'm happy enough to get the existing unit out, I'm not confident enough to retro fit it myself with all this Canbus and Fakra stuff, so best I get it fitted with a guarantee. Added to that, I'm 77,  still recovering from 2 lots of major surgery, and not as strong, agile or fit as I used to be.

Last thing I need is a DIY job ending in a smoking dashboard.

Thanks for trying to help. I appreciate it.

Keith

We are in the other situation of having the older RNS310(/5?) With Sat Nav in our 2015 Yeti. They have stopped doing SD card updates but my other half wants a 'standard sat nav' in her car.

I'm not sure if your Amundsen is still updateable or what's needed to code and fit it into a 2015 Yeti, but I'd definitely look into it if you are minded to get rid of it!

Hi Prezafab

My existing unit is failing due to the touch screen issue. It's totally hit and miss as to nav and radio, music input.

I understand that it can be repaired with a new Digitiser Screen unit.

I bought the Yeti 1.2 Drive model new in March 2017 up here in Newcastle on Tyne. For some reason the double din unit has 7/17 on it...? We'd had the car 4  months by July!

Anyway, it's being replaced by a non touchscreen model early next year.

Once it's out, it's of no use to me at all. I don't understand all this canbus, and other stuff, and don't want to risk an insurance issue in the event of an electrical issue, so I'm getting it fitted professionally

As to refitting it in another car, I have no idea how to do that. I THINK it is coded to only work with the car to which it's fitted, so that's an issue. It does have all the original stickers on it, including the unbroken warranty label.

It still has the original Yeti Map card (GB, Ireland and Europe) which I successfully updated in Sept 2021.

Get back to me if it's of interest. But you WILL need to sort out the screen issue.

Best advice I can give you though... Is don't bother.... get your wife a nice shiny new aftermarket unit, because frankly these Amundsen 2 nav units are not very good, and I'm being polite

That's why we ended up buying and still using today, a Garmin Dash mounted satnav whilst in France.... €90 euros problem solved!

Keith.

Ok thanks. Maybe I will have to convince her on something else !

Wise decision I reckon.

Just being honest with you. I wouldn't want to send you a poorly functioning doorstop.  I'm very annoyed with Skoda for selling me (and many others) a brand new £20,000 car with a cheap touch screen that has failed so quickly.

Take care. Happy Christmas.

Keith.

My sentiments exactly Keith.

I have had a couple of differences with the service adviser at my local dealers, and non of it over the past years that I've had Skoda's has been good.

From a doggy Fabia monte carlo to two Yeti's.

I now will not use them, as anyway I do all my service work out of warranty.

The last straw was over the Radio/Satnav problems. They just didn't want to know. Nor did Skoda.

We have been thinking of a new car for almost three years now, as our mileage had dropped right off.

I was slightly tempted by the new 2024 T-Cross, but there is such a bad cloud over VW in general, it looks like now another make.

Hi Carlo

Yep, you're spot on.

I'm afraid Skoda /VW are not even bothered about customer satisfaction.

Hence why they will never be seeing my cheque book again! The Yeti itself has been outstanding, and we have covered over 55,000 miles in it all over Europe and the UK trouble free. We have a good, reliable local garage who do most of our servicing but I still take care of what I can as it's cost effective.

Next car.... I don't know, but then it's difficult to surpass the Yeti. We like the relatively high driving position, and the ease of getting in and out of it. We love the super economical 1.2tsi petrol turbo engine which is outstanding. We love the ability to take all the rear seats out in 3 minutes flat to carry crazy amounts of things.

We love the interior

spaciousness, and the ability to drive down some quite rough tracks without a problem.

And then we look around at all these modern cars with their rounded corners, their boring, jelly mould shapes and their frankly god awful boring "sameness" and knew, actually, that back in 2017 Skoda /VW simply lost the plot by dumping the Yeti.

They also stopped taking any notice of CUSTOMERS.

We don't do Christmas, but I wish you a Happy 2024.

Keith.

As a final note to this post.

Many other types of touch screen units are available from cheap to expensive.

However, be aware that a lot of the fitting kits DO NOT fit the newer Yetis.

Most of the aftermarket units only list Yetis up to 2015. The 2017 Amundsen units are NOT compatible with 2015 fitting kits. Neither are manufacturers of replacement units very helpful because they simply don't want to be. It's now an old car.

In the end we went for a Kenwood unit, and had it fitted. Rather that than a burned out dash which would, of course, have invalidated our insurance.

So unless you really, really know what you are doing with modern vehicle electrics, my advice would be, get it fitted by a specialist. I've fitted many bog standard radios in my time, but these new systems are beyond me.

Thank to all who gave advice.

Bottom line is.... Skoda sold us a crap unit.
