Honestly...

Featured Replies

Rather incomprehensibly, I drive slower in the Fab vRS (which is the most powerful car I've ever owned) than I used to in the 1.6 Laguna which is hugely less powerful. I can't explain why, TBH.

I was on a course at Rivington, nr Chorley, the other day and had a reasonably sensible drive up there, but a rather quicker drive back. It still took around 2.5 hours door to door to Leicester (140 miles) at 48 mpg.

One of my colleagues claimed to have driven up there in 1 hr 45 mins in a Mondeo TDCI 130 (or maybe 155) at 36 mpg - d'oh! It's not even all motorway. I think he still believes those myths that the police can't be bothered to do people for speeding in hire cars.

36mpg? He must have been driving like a complete hooligan! I drive like a hooligan and get 40+mpg

i drive enthusiastically fairly reguarly and i get 25mpg............

Would you prefer we drove at a speed we felt was dangerous?

I drive at a speed I feel is safe given the road and conditions at the time ' date=' and the posted limit is one of many factors that I take into account when deciding this.

Why is it that if we are intelligent enough to decide that the safe speed at that time is below the limit we are praised , but when we can clearly see that the safe speed is above that limit we must be wrong?[/quote']

Not sure if you're jesting or just frustrated about cash machines (as we all are).

Logically, I guess if all drivers were as safe for the conditions as they thought they were, we'd need no speed limits at all, hence giving rise to that plan a year or so ago to remove pavements and all road markings, thus relying on drivers to be more alert. Anyone have any feedback on that experiment?

I tend to agree, Mo. A lot of the problems are caused by people's attitudes to driving and their reslience to analyse their driving and look at ways of improving themselves. I've been in cars with people who don't look beyond the end of their car's bonnet and also wannabe racing drivers who think they are above average drivers and are driving at a "safe" speed cos they can handle a car. Needless to say, I'd bet both would come unstuck very quickly if something they were not expecting happened.

Chris

i won't say the speeds which i have done in the past as i will only get slated for it :(

its not something to be proud of or to shout about, i've driven at very silly speeds and tbh i think back and wonder how i am still here.

the country route from oxford to bicester(goochie should know it i think) via islip, i have driven that road a lot faster in a 1.3 metro gta than i would in my octavia as it currently is.

its not big and its not clever but sometimes i just do it.

Very true. Ever since I was a nipper my old man passed on this bit of wisdom to me - has served me well through my bike riding years and now in cars...

Basically, no matter how good a driver is they can only do so much if they dont pay other road users enough attention. Reading the road ahead is all well and good, but we've all seen the indicating left, turn right drivers who are in their own little world... At best reading the road is an informed guess relying on the others around you.

As it happens this only happened to me the other day - Coming towards a roundabout near a major supermarket - decided not to go to supermarket and so indicated right to go all the way around and Gormy guy pulls out in front of me thinking I was obviously going to the supermaket. The surprise caught him out...

Try to stick to 30 & 40 mph limits, on Open roads and motorways NSL like to let the car breath alittle.

Limits always respected in my LGV, due to the ADR goods on board and other fragile goods.
