The hybrid war 1.4 TSI vs 1.5 TSI PHEV

Featured Replies

Hi All!

I’ve tried posting on the “about to buy…” section but no one replied. I hope admins don’t mid if I try my luck here.

Anyone can shed some light on the differences between the 1.4 and 1.5 TSI hybrids engines? I currently have the 1.4TSI petrol (no issues and very happy with it) and considering getting a hybrid Superb or Octavia (2021 onwards) but a bit confused about the differences. I hear that the distribution for the 1.5 is pretty laborious and expensive and that the mileage is better for the 1.4.

Would also appreciate a bit of advice on Superb vs Octavia. I've had 2 Octavias in the past (MK1 and MK2) and although you get probably more optionals in a Superb I can't help but feel like it's a bit too big for me. Two points definitely in favour of Superb in my book are the analog climate controls and the traditional gear stick.

Thanks

There are no 1.5 TSI PHEV Octavia yet.    You will need to get a VW or Audi to get one of those.

There are 1.5 TSI Mild Hybrids.

Aah! That's a revelation, thank you so much.

The mild hybrid 1.5 has engine-off coasting which can save a lot of fuel compared to the standard version which idles the engine instead when coasting, wasting fuel

i drove a Leon one of these as a hire car in Switzerland last year and it averaged around 5L/100km, 55-56mpg from memory.

I don’t think there are any 1.5 PHEVs out yet? The new passat and superb should both have the new 1.5 version but they are not yet available to order. The 1.5 version is meant to be much more efficient on fuel than the outgoing 1.4. As an example my 1.4 PHEV octy estate (non-vRS) will do about 52-55mpg on a run with a flat battery (70-75 on the motorway, just me in the car) I’d imagine a 1.5 phev version would be up in the 60s
