Washable air filter re-oiling?

Featured Replies

I've just cleaned my JR filter, ready to go into the new RS.

I've got some K&N filter oil from a couple of cars ago, so the question is would this be compatible with the JR filter?

They seem to be of the same design (oiled cotton gauze) so I'm hoping I could use this instead of buying the JR stuff.

What do you think?

I wouldn't use an oiled filter since the oil could end up contaminating the MAF. That said, badger5 has recently posted comments on this subject here and I recommend that you read them.

I really wouldn't do it if I were you, to agree with Denis's comments.

My personal experience is a cotton filter (re-oilable) that I fitted to my A4 V6 TDi. I fitted it just before a rechip and it ruined the MAF sensor at a cost of

I used the same JR filter in my last TDi for nearly 20,000 miles and I didnt have any problems, but point taken on board Denis.

IIRC important not to oil the filter too much and let it dry thouroughly afterwards.

So what about the induction kits that some Octy RS owners seem to be using?

Are these oiled or dry cotton gauze?

btw mine is the sort that drops into the standard airbox, not the induction kit.

Matthew,

I had a chat with Bill and Deejay off CupraNet regarding Green filters. I was also concerned about oil getting sucked off the filter and fouling up the MAF.

Apparently MAFs are just as failure prone as OEM DVs and induction mits are always blamed. There was also an issue with K&N filters but this is probably more to do with them being over oiled after being cleaned.

I've run mine for 5k miles and not had any problems. I'll be cleaning the filter soon so appreciate the info you've given about not over oiling and allowing it to dry properly. Jon (TaviaRS) also had/has a Dynatwist and I don't think he's had any problem with it either.

Cheers.

Adrian.

I neat trick is to put scientific filter paper (whatman) on the engine side of the filter post oiling and run like this for a few miles and then check the paper for smudges. If any you have over oiled the filter and its worth starting all over again. When I reoil filters I do so very gingerly and often give then very light coatings allow to dry and then recoat as required.

Adrian, Andy, Rob,

Thanks both for the advice and thoughts. I think careful re-oiling is the key and letting the filter dry properly before fitting. I shall post on tdiclub to get some more opinions before I go ahead.

I reckon the K&N oil is the same as the K&N stuff though. In fact their filters seem identical in design apart from the colour (blue vs red)

Exactly. I have mine (KN) for more than 10.000 klms with no problems at all. And I have washed it and re oiled it once.

Here's what Green say re cleaning their Cotton Gauze filters.

Be very light on the re-oiling... It does'nt take much.

If disturbing the MAF to access the filter etc... be very careful with it and prevent it from being banged or dropped... This kills them.

The instructions for the Green filter are almost the same as the JR instructions.

I shall have a go at doing a few light applications, and stick it in the airing cupbaord between coats. :D

Badger5 - out of interest what type of filter do you use on the Ibiza?
