New superb, new sound

Featured Replies

Hello Škoda! After long consideration, I am finally selling my old car and decided to go with 2020 Superb L&K. I love it so far.

Yet still, before buying I had good amount of time to examine every bit what should be included in L&K, and now, with keys in my hand I see some differences.

Music system is very important to me and I see that in my car I can only make changes in basic 3 band EQ and sub individually, and not full 6 band EQ (attaching photos for better understanding).

Do I need a software update or something?

That's because they changed the Canton system with the facelift Superb.

If I remember correctly, there is also no longer a large Sub in the left side of the boot.

A shame they went backwards with the facelift Superb.

In fact they went backwards on a few things.

I have a 2021 facelift L&K - and I have both the Sub in the boot and the 6 toggles in equalizer 😉

@komoornik - oh, that's interesting.
maybe u got the "non-chip shortage version" of the Canton system.

or maybe it was just the iV Superb that has the dumbed down Canton System?

Also I'v noticed there is no wireless android auto. To get best audio quality i need to use usb cable. Mabye there is a (aftermarket) way to fix this?

And weirdly I cant see album logo (only artist and song info) in virtual cockpit while connected audio via bluetooth. Also while using usb cable for audio, cockpit doesnt show anything, just 'connected via USB'.

Same for me with my 2023 L&K.

limited edition 😞

Labas! check other attributes of Canton, logos on doors, sub woofer in trunk

and is it Mib2, Mib2.5 or Mib3? last one can be recognised by USB Typ C

The facelift Superb has the full Canton system with sub and the extra equaliser toggles. Having had a both pre-facelift Superb with Canton (2019 with MIB 2.5) and a now a facelift version with Canton (2021 MIB3), I can say that the MIB 3 version of Canton sounds far better. The sound is fuller and richer. While the specs and speakers would seem to be the same between the two, it feels like the DSP and amp have been tweaked with the facelift. I was never highly impressed with the sound of the pre-facelift Canton, whereas I have been very pleasantly surprised with facelift version. It’s now one of the best OEM systems at this price point I have heard.

Hi! There is logos on the doors etc, i see canton settings in meniu. Not sure if its mib 2.0 or 2.5 (can check it after work today), the screen is with touch sensitive bottons on the sides.

Hi. I know it should be full EQ etc (obviously because its 2020 FL model) but this IS the problem, I have Amundsen sceen with few less options. Not sure if sound itself and amplifier is like in preFL model but it sounds decent to me.

The cause of this old infotainment system in FL model i believe is chip shortage period. What are my options now? Is it hard and expensive to upgrade to mib3?

Amundsen's screens can look the same with different generation head units

few other signs:

mib2* USB Type A

mib3   USB Type C

mib2* SD card readers in glove box

mib3 blanking plate in glove box

title of maps version (Menu -> Settings -> System Information)

mib2*  2023/2024

mib3   23.11

mib2* wired AA

Mib3   wireless AA

mib2* option for manually upload radio stations logos individually for each favorite station

mib3   - -

mib2* - -

mib3   inet-radio

mib2* 3x6 favorite list of radio stations

mib3   5x6

2 SD card slots in glove box unit.

then it's Mib2, my previous Mib2H Columbus 8" of 2016. Mk3 also had 3 tone sliders + subwoofer level

Well damn me.. What are my options for better sound then? 😃 Is it possible so swap somehow main unit to get mib3? Mabye official dealer could do this, but i guess it would be expensive af 🫣

Yes, thinking back to my 2019 vehicle and noting yours is 2020, I would agree that your Canton is an MIB 2.5 version. As a 2020 car,  I suspect yours is an early facelift vehicle and they hadn’t quite introduced MIB 3 when it rolled down the production line.

So not a software fix unfortunately. My thoughts are your options are limited to either approaching the dealer for the pricing on a new MIB 3 infotainment unit (and it may possibly require a new DSP/amp etc under seat as well), which might be quite expensive. Or try and find a written off/totalled car example of an MIB 3 system, which is a pretty hit and miss option.

Thanx for reply. Well Im quite picky for sound quality and other stuff like navi doesnt really matter for me. I need to know if mib3 unit is worth the upgrade for wider EQ profiling and overall better sound quality.

Stuff like wireless AA also is'nt the must feature, since gadgets like AAwireless exist.

P.s. Mabye you know why I can't see audio info and artist logo in digital cockpit while playing via android auto (wired)? It just says 'usb connection'.

Quite interesting experience. Never heard a pre-facelift Canton myself - but I heard probably like at least 5 people mentioning that actually they think pre-facelift is much better.

Overall it's true - hardware seems to be the same, but the software is different.

Sound is very subjective, and the MIB 2.5 Canton is certainly a clear improvement over the standard non-Canton system. However, to my ears, and having played the same music through both an MIB 2.5 Canton and MIB 3 Canton, the MIB 3 is a clear winner. The additional equaliser controls are useful, and the sound has a richer and more immersive feel. I also think the subwoofer is better integrated into the soundscape. It would appear that DSP was tweaked between MIB 2 and 3.

Unfortunately I can’t say why the artist and album art aren’t displaying in the virtual cockpit on yours, as I’ve always have used a USB at 320kbps to connect for music. I remember the track information would display correctly in the VC in my 2019 MIB 2.5 without a problem (and does on the current MIB 3), but from a USB, as I said. Maybe check the way track data is stored on your phone, as the system maybe unable to extract it to display?

similar conclusion, when compare 2016. Mib2 High Columbus Canton to 2023. Mib3 Amundsen Canton

overall yes, but far from perfect -

low mids now are richer,
but the high frequencies are smeared, sounds like additional compression artefacts,
even on FM stations, where highs are cut by broadcasting standard
