Jumped Timing

Featured Replies

Had my vRS in for the 40k service and a change of cam belt. Went to pick it up only to be told by the garage that it had stalled and they couldn't start it again. The official descriptions was that the timing had "jumped" and that they would need to strip it down again. Anyone know what they mean?

Opps sounds like the cambelt has jumped then or whomever did the cambelt didnt time it up right.

Shouldn't be to bad, they said it would be ready tomorrow lunchtime...........hopefully

depends how far it "jumped" if it jumped enough to stop then it could possibly have bent a few valves - not nice when theres 20 of them!

That was my first thought too, jumped timing belt = buggered engine. Will have to see what happens when they call me this morning

What Lummox said. On the credit side, this does mean that the garage will be responsible for fixing any engine damage.

Well, went to pick it up at lunch and they said that the belt had slipped one tooth so there was no damage. All put back together again but when I got in it after a few seconds running the temperature warning light came on but the temp was only at about 50. Went back to an embarrassed Service Manager who has just called to tell me that the coolant level had dropped, apparently this happens a lot when the engines been stripped down. Not sure about that to behonest anyone heard that before? Apparently when they have done a test run it can be left for a few minutes and the level drops, happens all the time so they say :worried:

I would have thought that drop indicated the system hadn't been fully bled of air. It is not something I would worry about unless the car loses coolant in the future.

Thanks..........I'll keep an eye on it

The level will drop as the system cools back down again, heat causes expansion.
