Turbo remove and rebuild

Hi Guru's

Skoda VRS BWA engine,

After having the dreaded Oil pressure issues, and then balance shaft seize, I now have a noisy turbo, only for a few minutes 1st thing in the morning, gonna rebuild it before it throws a complete wobbler and destroys what's left,

Questions are - 

Does the turbo need to be removed complete with the exhaust manifold or can the turbo be split from it, leaving the manifold bolted to the engine,

And if I get just the cartridge are they difficult to split apart?
