Hi everyone 

just bought my next Superb with 112000 miles on the clock and thinking of changing the cambelt kit 

I know that the cam belt service is 140000 miles or 5 years but the previous owner said that his previous superb snapped the belt at 116000 

Any thoughts please

Quick question. We know what your mileage is, but what year is your car please? (Edit. Just seen.... 2020).

Personally. Given the chilling response which your seller gave, I'd look to replace ASAP.

 

This might sound academic now, as you've already bought the car, but seeing as the previous owner has had a bad experience in the past, did it not occur to him/her to replace the Timing belt rather than present the new owner with a (potential) ticking timebomb?

 

One final thing... Please, please tell us that you managed to negotiate the purchase price down by a suitable amount to help cover the £600+ bill.

 

Sorry I cant help with a Liverpool based specialist but I'd be really interested to hear how you got on...

I've just been through the exact same thing myself . In my case the water pump just let go, which served as a timely warning to get both cambelt and WP done - this week!

What if the car was priced accordingly? It does not sound like the seller was trying to hide anything so why should he be expected to pay the next owners running costs?

 

When people try that with me it is the end of the negotiations and I politely explain that my vehicle is not for them, it is often followed by a "Wot, ain't my money good enuff for yer?" to which I respond once again politely in the affirmative.

acknowledged that the OPs is a 2.0TDi but I fairly recently bought a 1.4TSi Superb3 with 126k on the clock and no cambelt done. As confirmed by Skoda the interval on that is 15 years/180k miles which given I only do between 5-10k per year means I will most likely have sold it before the next change due.

Would I change it before selling ? All depends. If I did then the asking price would probably go up. Would it really affect the asking price if not done or would it simply make it more sellable ?

I think we'll have to agree to disagree here.

I didn't suggest for one minute that the owner was trying to hide anything. Suggest you read my comment again carefully..

lets put it this way. If you're happy buying a car which looked like it 'might' 'possibly' need a considerable spend on it at some point soon without a price adjustment, then fine, good for you. What works for you doesn't necessarily work for me. We're all different, so each to their own.

I am happy buying a car that is worth the money that the seller is asking for it, its a reasonable assumption that the OP was happy with the price he paid and also that the seller was open with him, probably not so happy to be told that he has bought a ticking time bomb especially when the vehicle is well under the cam belt inspection limit and at less than a half of the mileage that I change mine at.

 

There is zero correlation between what happened on the sellers previous vehicle and what might happen on the one he has sold, your comment imploring the OP to discuss the deal that he struck was and is inappropriate as was the ticking time bomb.

 

But hey, each to their own!

The cambelt stuff has been discussed a few times recently.  The time in the UK has been dropped in line with may other markets.  The mileage has also been increase though the information on this is more woolly.  Two of the figures batted abut are 120k and 140k (miles).  This is across the VAG group engines of both fuel type.
