Coolant leak, bypass? 1.4 BXW 2009

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

the Fabia from my girlfriend (1.4 BXW from 2009) ist leaking coolant. First a few drops every 1000km but now we have to top up 100ml every 10km.

The first picture show where it's leaking, quite obvious. Is this the crankcase ventilation heating? See pic 1.

The end in the red circle is connected to the top radiator hose, see pic 2.

The end in the green circle is connected to the coolant expansion reservoir, see pic 3.

Of course I need to replace this part, but the difficulty is that we're not at home, it's weekend and have to drive home (400km) Sunday evening. It's highly questionable if I can find a replacement part tomorrow, so I'm playing with the thought to buy a new piece of hose and (temporarily) bypass the plastic part that's leaking, from the radiator side to the expansion reservoir. That way I take the leaking part out of the system.

Would this be a solution (temporarily) or would this be a bad idea? The crankcase ventilation heating isn't needed at the moment since it's not freezing, right?

Cheers and
thanks in advance!

Good plan. Do it. 👍

Doubt you'd miss it if you left it like that hereafter.

Can you confirm this is the heating for the crankcase ventilation?

I’m not super familiar with this car and engine.

Yep, exactly that, I believe, because the airbox has no temperature control/warm-air feed unlike previous iterations on the 1.4/16V engines.

I did it as described and it works perfect so far, a few days and around 400km no problem. New part is ordered.
