High rpm at startup

Featured Replies

Hiya, I’ve got a 63 plate 1.2 tsi fabia and at the moment I’ve got a intermittent fault at startup which when I turn the key the cad will go to about 2000 rpm for a few seconds then settle back down to 1000 rpm.
From what I’ve found it could be a number of things and the first I want to check is the throttle body, without being naive can anyone tell me where my throttle body is on my engine, I’ve only been able to find mk1s on YouTube etc.

I appreciate any help and if anyone has any other ideas to what could be causing this fault. I don’t have any engine faults and my air filter and spark plugs were replaced in my last service which was about 5000 miles ago.

Does it do this every time or just when it is cold ?

It is not unusual for a car to start this way.

What did it used to do when you started it pre service, or when did you first notice this high rpm behaviour?

Was this how it became 5,000 miles ago following the service?

Euro 5 1.2 TSI.

Normal is starting at about 1,100 rpm and within about 40 seconds dropping to 800-850 rpm if the AC is not on.

So not 1,000 rpm.

Regardless of ambient temp.

Look at the air filter and see if it is still clean and dry.

Was it you that changed the spark plugs and air filter?

EDIT.

Others here with a 1.2 TSI might look when they start there car today and the rev counter and see what they get for the first minute when starting.

Unlock the drivers door and the fuel pump primes before the key is in the ingnition.

Key in and maybe Needle Sweep.

Then when starting what RPM, then what within a minute.?

Probable their wiper arms will be corroded like those @Gabercrombie has in the picture.

I’ve started to notice this behaviour within the last two weeks and been from cold start but not in the mornings strangely only has happened in the afternoons after work etc. only noticed it a few times now, 4 times max I would say.
The rest of the time when it’s behaving itself it will go to around 1100 rpm and after a few seconds go down to 800 ish mark.
I didn’t change the air filter or spark plugs used a reliable authorised Skoda garage, Quattro tech if you’ve heard of them.

Check for leaks / splits of breathers, intakes.

Open the Air Filter box and see the Airfilter is correct and a nice tight fit and the same with the kid closed.
