Dashboard warning message: 12V battery almost empty. The infotainment system will be switched off. Skoda Fabia (Start and Stop engine) 1.4TDI

Featured Replies

Dear all,

Has anybody had issues with the battery of a Start and Stop engine on a Skoda Fabia (1.4 TDI diesel)?

I bought my Skoda Fabia from an approved Skoda Garage last May and since its purchase I have been getting a warning message about the 12V battery. Whenever I turn the engine off,  the dashboard says  'the 12V battery is almost empty'. My car went back to the Skoda garage twice and both times I was told that my car battery was charging well. As I kept getting the warning message,  I contacted Skoda Customer Services.  After giving my chassis number I was told by Skoda Services that  'the preferred battery for my vehicle, based on the information in the Owner's Manual was an AGM battery'. My car had an EFB battery and its reference didn't even match the car's.  I complained to the garage I bought the car from and put a complain into Skoda Customer Services. My car battery was then replaced with a brand battery with the correct reference code however the garage replaced it by another EFB battery. I was going to complain once again but the car started working fine. I didn't get warning messages for nearly two months. Then in February the issue started again. I have been in touch with Skoda Customer Services and was suggested to take it to another approved Skoda garage in order to get a diagnosis. I am writing on this forum to see if anybody has experience the same issue with their car.

Thank you very much,

Lily

Hello Lily, welcome to the forum.

The car can be fitted with either EFB or AGM battery, either type is correct - AGM is better, but considerably more expensive.

Given the advice you have been given by your garage so far, it sounds very possible that the replacement battery has not been correctly adapted (coded) into the vehicle when it was fitted - this should be checked/confirmed asap.

That is the type of battery normally fitted to the Fabia III.

Do you do long or short journeys and what sort of annual mileage do you do?

My Fabia III has the original EFB battery still in it after 8 Years and 80K miles.

The car does get used on longer journeys and I charge the battery using a smart charger.

Both of these things can help with the charge and health of your battery.

Thanks. AG Falco
