a few cross overs there @BTandSid :)

A lot of it was down to what I could afford and with hindsight I shouldn’t have touched a couple of them with a barge pole 😄 Still, you live and learn and over the years have had less issues with my choices. The Impreza still holds a place in my heart though for it’s sheer pace, road holding and that lovely ‘Boxer engine burble’

Oh my goodness yes, 'sheer pace'.  Place in my heart was my (allegedly stock) Saab 9-5 HOT Aero.  I had no real idea until owning one, but I have an endearing memory of taking my Dad out in it and showing him the midrange performance.  A  simply outstanding treasure in my memory 😎

Talking of memory:  (in order) 1978 Honda Camino 50cc (Reg: THC 1S - if only I knew!), 1972 Austin 1300 Van Den Plas, 1973 Renault 16TL, 1976 Ford Cortina Mk3 XL, 1979 FIAT 132 2.0, 1981 FIAT 132 2.0, 1982 Opel Ascona 1.6, 1981 FIAT 132 2.0, 1982 FIAT 132 2.0, 1984 Nissan Bluebird 2.0SGL, 1990 Honda Civic 1.4, 1995 Honda Accord 2.0,  1999 VW Passat Estate 1.9TDI, 1989 Mk2 Golf GTI 16v, 1992 Honda CRX Del Sol 1.6 (UK), 2001 Saab 9-5 2.3 HOT Aero, Honda CRX Del Sol 1.5 (JDM - sold on Brisky),  2005 Skoda Superb 2.5V6TDI, 2015 Skoda vRS TSI Estate, 2018 VW Golf GTI (current car).  There'll be others I've momentarily forgotten :blush

I've got a few (near) ticks there,

(1966) Vanden Plas 1100 (single carb),

I drove a mate's Beetle once not my cup of Darjeeling at all,

I really enjoyed a ride out four up in a 2CV in the late 70s with the Daventry roundabouts in the fog at a pace to a village somewhere in the fog, I thought about getting a Lomax three-wheeler at one time,

(2000) LHD smart Passion coupe,

(1996) Rover Mini Cooper 1.3i,

I always fancied a SAAB 900 (and 99 and 96) I test drove a s/h 9000 but it was far too big for my likes,

a mate was a rep and had use of his boss's BX 16v, being a rep and having no costs to the car he drove it like a rep, great fun on the country roads.

I've had a few pushbikes in the past but nothing with an engine despite carrying an organ donation card since 1985.

On the day I drove the Impreza I pottered down to the dealers and he gave me the keys and said take it for a run. So off I went and my oh my the sheer acceleration was astonishing. It was a ‘standard’ classic 2.0 litre which I think ran at about 235bhp and I’d never driven anything like that. The straights were great and it even straightened out the twisties 🙂 The Granada was a 3litre but never had anywhere near that power.
After a few years I took it to a very reputable guy near Swindon and had it updated to about 285bhp and it never ever missed a beat from that day on.
Moved on to a Forester which came with the same initial engine.
It was always fun sitting at the lights in either, next to your hoon in his Corsa or Escort, waiting to race you up the road, only ever to always arrive a distant second at the next set of lights 🤣

Not done this one for a while (ownership order and sometimes having more than one at a time)

1989 Vauxhall Astra 1.3 Merit

1997 Vaxhall Astra 1.6 16v Arctic

2001 Ford Focus 1.9TD

2004 Renault Clio 1.5dCi (100hp)
1993 Kawasaki ZXR400

2007 Skoda Octavia VRS TFSI (and starting in these hallowed halls)

2010 Honda Accord 2.2d

2015 Mazda 3 2.2d

2016 BMW 335d
2013 Mini Clubman Cooper
2019 Mini Countryman JCW

2018 Ranger Rover Vogue V6d

2013 Mini Coupe JCW

2016 Suzuki Jimny 1.3
2016 Mazerati Quattroporte V6d

The BMW 335d and the RR Vogue are probably the closest I've got to the perfect car to do everything. If the BMW was an estate with uprated M sport brakes I think it would have nailed it. I can see us going back to either of those cars in some way.

Having had to get shot of the Freelander thanks to Khans ULEZ expansion I’d have loved to have moved to a Vogue or Discovery but getting one that was compliant would have been too costly; the other option would have been to have gone older but then there would have been the inevitable repair and maintenance bills 🙁 And there now seems to be a lot of these big 4x4s (RR, Hyundai Tucson as well) being stolen on a daily basis

The (now cancelled) ULEZ in Manchester was why my Mitsubishi L200 went as well
