Hi all.  For a few months the ABS warning light has been coming on intermittently; when not on, the ABS works.  When on, doesn't etc.  Thought it might be a sensor.

 

Took it to a local, reputable garage today who didn't do any visual checks but scanned it and yielded:-

 

1.01276 ABS hydraulic pump - electrical fault in circuit

 

I asked if sensors and wiring etc had been checked and was told no, as 'where do you start'.   Only option was a new ABS computer module at £1300, which is more than the car value.

 

Car by the way is 1.9 TDI Mark 2.

 

So... is it effectively a slow write-off (seven months left on MOT) or is there hope?

Where I'd start is by looking at the connections to the fuse of, and the wiring to the ABS return flow pump.

Apologies for the delayed reply!

 

I took it to another garage and turns out... it was the ABS pump!

 

So that's a gulf of about £1000 in repairs between the two garages.
