Creaking Dash! Really annoying! Please Help!

Featured Replies

Hey there

I have just joined the 'skoda club'and bought a second hand 1400cc 16v Comfort Fabia, 2001 reg.

It is a fantastic little car...except for one thing...the dashboard emitts this really annoying creak just above the radio/air con area, especially over long distance trips where it gets louder! Tried to drown it out with the radio...but doesn't really work. Really irritating..

I have had a look at previous threads but have been unable to find anything conclusive...or rather that I can understand. Please help! Any advice will be much appreciated!

Thanks!

a "common" fault as it likes to be called on here if you take out the centre air vents you will see a metal bar running across the dash just above that there is like to pieces of plastic coming from the dash with a gap between them you need to wedge something in between the metal and the plastic bits a used a couple of wall plugs worked a treat. i hope this helps its kind of hard to explain without being there!

Thank you! Will give that a try!

Cure that and you will have another soon after. NO car will ever be free of creaks/rattles/vibrations, I dont car what it is or how much you spend. The simple law of physics means that thousands of moving/bolted/screwed parts + bumpy/uneven roads WILL = these problems. Just live with it, or go mad.

It's particularly the case in the hot weather we're having. I wouldn't advise you to do anything drastic, it may stop making the noise when the hot spell ends. My VRS creaks like a bad back, but when the air-cons been on for a while and things have cooled down the creaks and rattles stop.

Ford seemed to have managed it - 55k miles squeak, rattle and creak free, and counting :D So do BMW in the high-milers I've looked at :D

Hiya,

I have a fabia comfort 2000 with the same problem. I took it to a garage and they TOOK THE WHOLE DASHBOARD OUT and put foam behind it even though i had told them what to do(put packing material between the dashboard mount and dashboard behind the air vents) Well as i thought this lasted 2 days and the creak was back and they charged me

Somebody else recommended making a wedge out of a wine cork. Cut it in half then make a wedge shape out of one of those halves and jam it between the metal bar and the plastic. The hard part is getting the wedge to the back without it dropping. There are now two halves of cork somewhere down the back of my air vents!!

Wedging kitchen roll in seems to have reduced the problem, but the chamois idea sounds better. Will give that a go.

The rattle that really annoys me is coming from just above the dashboard console (i.e. just above.behind the steering wheel). The trim is obviously coming slightly loose from whatever it's mounted on, as even feather light light pressure shuts it up. It feels as though it needs sticking down, but there is no way to get in there. It's soooooooo irritating, as everything else is quiet.

Yes indeed - this appears to be a classic Fabia problem. When we had ours it went to the garage twice and they didn't cure it ...

... but the solution about wedging something into "the spot" with a long screwdriver is exactly what I did (bit of rag!) and it worked a treat.

i also get that craeking above the steering wheel but cant think of a thing to fix it i am also busy trying to fix the glove box rattle too!

Thanks for all the useful info! I will update this post as soon as I know whether the creak has been fixed. Til then!
