Do I have lin- or can-bus operated windows?

Featured Replies

Hello! There's a lot of information about window failures, but couldn't find an answer for this particular topic.

I bought a 2007 Roomster for a very reasonable price (well, there's no cheap and good, so lot of work) with very messed up power windows. Driver side works, but opposite directions than switch, non-driver side works properly and rear windows are very dead. Some shop have tried to fix it for 400€ before I got this car and ended up to that situation.

Tried to make some sense with a friend who's former vag mechanic with vcds and ross-tech cable, the car seems to be ok from that point of view but vcds states that the windows could be lin- or can-bus operated. Lin-bus don't show up for coding, neather do this windows, but how do I know which one do I have?

There is lot of discussion about lin operated windows on Fabia 2 part of the forum, so I'll continue there if I have that same system.

You do have a LIN window motor system.

Can you message me the VIN, so I can check exact part numbers for you?

It sounds like the driver's door window motor may have been replaced with one from a Polo, with only front electric windows.

I think that might account for the  reversal of up/down and lack of activity at rears.

VCDS can see none of the system as there is no data connection to anything central.

Wow, great information and very specific knowledge! Thanks!

Driver's door motor for your car should be 6Y2959802A, with the bottom line of the label saying SK258D4DLS.

I think you possibly will find 6Y2959802 and VW240DDLS instead.

The direction swap could be fixed on what you have, but it will never operate the rear windows.

If you could find a non-working 6Y2959802A with either SK258D4DLS or SK250D4DLS (from Fabia mk2), I know a place in Finland who could repair it.

All of the above part number info is for LHD cars only, to avoid confusion amongst UK readers.

Also only for Roomsters built up to 04/11/2007.

Awesome! So the part number is same for every Polo/Fabia/Roomster front window motors but the bottom line is different? That how it seems after a quick google. If it's so, then it's a bit a pita to search, but doable of course. Most of the cars here in Finland are sold with quite poor optional equipments so it may take some time to find that kind of part used, but I'll keep my eyes open. I was sensing some hussle, when the seller told that the car has been in shop where they couldn't fix the problem and here we go. They should definitely been asking from there beforehand!

Thanks again, very pleasant to find a active forum fit that much knowledge!

Yes, the part numbering  of the 6Y... motors is unusual.

That bottom line can be very important to avoid LHD (LS)/RHD(RS) mix-ups, and brand/model mismatches.

Mk1 Fabia facelift has the only version of this part numbering format which is logical and consistent with VW-group norms.

(Where the third digit is 1 for LHD, 2 for RHD; and the 9th digit is 1 for 'fits left side of car' and 2 for right side).

All subsequent/other applications have this logic reversed, due to different mounting of motor modules and regulator mechanisms.

Ok. And that specific part could be found from a Fabia mk1, Fabia mk2 or Skoda Roomster with 4 powered windows? Do Polo or any other vag car have the same part?

Should the part number been found from this sticker orvsomewhere else?IMG_20240514_100026.png.e06a8e0b2b9ea334ab3281adc3504074.png

Mk1 Fabia can have 6Y2959802A if RHD and all four electric windows, but if used in a LHD Roomster the switches will operate the wrong window. Rather rare anyway.

Polo in LHD form will have 6Y2959802A if all four windows are electric, but up/down may be reversed (please check the numbering on yours to confirm).

LHD VW Transporter T5 also had 6Y2959802, but never the four electric windows suffix-A version.

Ok. How about the number, should it be in that sticker I edited to last post?

On the 6Y.  series the VW-group part number (6Y2959802A for your car, nothing else will do) and the SK258D4DLS (or whatever) is always on the same label.

I never ceased to be amazed at the knowledge that @Breezy_Pete has and his willingness to help others.

Good on you sir!

PS, I hope you get good news soon regarding your house.

Hi again, Pete! I managed to find a motor with matching second line, and this is definitely from Roomster with 4 power windows. Anyhow, the first line is wrong as it's 6Q2.959.802.G so is this any use for my car? If this is from too new car, I assume the operating protocol is different or something like that?

Main difference is the connections.

The 6Y... has an 8-way and a 6-way connector into the window motor module. 6Q2959802G has a single 16-way connector.

You could 'cut and shut' the wiring if you had a loom connector to suit the 802G, with enough wires in it, I think.

Thanks for a extremely fast and informative answer! That sounds perfectly doable, so I have to look for a connector to match and a wiring diagram.

If you have any trouble finding wiring info, let me know and I can dig it out for you.

Hi again! Roomster is still kickin' but needs a lot of attention here and there. Since the both of rear window lifters failed recently and I have spares on the go, decided to remove wrong driver door motor and change the right part there.

Well, that seems to be not so easy, as Pete told, so wiring diagram could bev extremely helpful, if anybody do have it?

For reference, there is the part I removed and one I'm struggling to fit. There is no single digit right on the old one, and seller told me that it was fixed on a car electric's shop. Woldn't recommend that shop.IMG-20251207-WA0002_copy_712x1267.jpg

Great! I'm going to have some time to solder it maybe tomorrow or later on this week. I planned to use the angled connector piece from the new motor and take the old connector from the circuit board, then create some frankenpart out of those. This way I don't have to cut wires and it's hopefully going to be easy to use and sturdy. There is 14 pins on both, so should be doable.

Should bring you a six pack or something next time we visit my wifes relatives in UK 😅
