1.2 TSI 110HP - Check oil level warning

Featured Replies

My car threw me the Check Oil light today whilst cruising on the motorway. However upon checking the oil still shows half way on the dip stick. It has 141.000 on the clock and has had all oil services. Last oil change was 7354km ago. What is a normal oil usage for a 1.2 TSI and how can it give this error with this much oil left?

It was not an ERROR.   It was advice, a warning, a heads up.

You can open the bonnet when the oil is low, add no oil, close the bonnet and the warning might not show again for 100km.

.....................

Is that the oil as it was Hot with the engine stopped a few minutes,.?

I can not really tell what it shows.

Anyway, where was it hot checked or cold checked after the last oil & filter change?

When was it last checked?

You needed some oil, to take it to the Area A, top of cross hatch.    How much oil did it need?

..................

You do not want low oil on a Motorway and less oil gets hot and needs to work harder, takes more to cool.

?
WHAT WAS THE OIL TEMPERATURE SHOWING AT, OR DO YOU NEVER LOOK?

Thank you for your reply. I had to as 0.7L to get it to the top of the stick as you showed in the image above.

Oil temperature at motorway speeds are around 96-101C depending on uphill or flat surfaces. Water temp stable at 90.

It needed oil then.  So did you check when it came back after the last service that the level was correct or when did you last check,?   Some oil use can happen, but unless you know how quickly it happened then topping up after getting a warning by light or message is a good thing.    Check regularly.

I had a service 1700km ago on my 2.0 TDI and just had an oil warning pop up... 🥲 Will see when it cools down

That is the sensible thing.

But while it was hot / at normal operating temperature was the time to check as well.

Just checked, apparently 0,5 liters went out,  but its still in the OK zone on dipstick, I could just refill it for that amount... I thought it was drained way more so it had me shook haha... Its a vRS also and I heard rumors those engines chug oil so it worried me at first

@LucidEric  I hear similar, but that is about 2.0 TDI, so is your vRS a TDI and not a TSI.

The thing is if people do not check the oil level after a oil and filter service then again regularly they often do get a surprise that they get a low oil warning, they really should not.

?

Is it at the OK zone on the dipstick with the oil showing a 90*oC or so temperature and the engine stopped for a few minutes?

Yes I checked it about 15 minutes after stopping the engine, so Id say it was still close a bit low than 90°C. I had a 100km drive so Id say it was quite warm before stopping the engine. :)

And yea its a TDI. I know this might be out of topic since thread started with TSI and I apologize but yea 😅

OK.

So maybe no difference if always checked the same way.

But after 15 minutes is not a 'few minutes' as said in the owners manual,  & warm is not 'At Operating Temperature'  or Normal Operating Temperature.

So know there is enough in when cold, engine not started, then again when it has been run to operating temperature using the dame time.

But stopping the car and opening the bonnet and checking after less than 5 minutes seems simple enough.

Like a Technician should check after doing a service and carrying out a road test.   If they ever do road tests and not just take the car around to the pick up bay,

or where it gets Wash (Scratch) & vacuum.
