Title is it really. I own a diesel 2018 MK3 Octavia VRS. Looking to get a towbar fitted to get a caravan on however have seen some stuff on the forum suggesting some vehicles never got the proper type approval and were recorded as having 0kg Gross Train Weight. Anyone ever heard of this or know how I may be able to establish for sure whether I can tow or not?

Check the vehicle data plate on your car for GTW.

 

I *think* the 0kg GTW problem only applies to the Octavia 4.

Thats reassuring, cheers. Plate seems to suggest max GTW of 3512kg if I'm not mistaken.

So max trailer weight is 3512-1912kg = 1600kg, which is slightly over the often mentioned 80% of vehicle weight guideline which would be 1529kg.

If you have the TDI184, then you are good to tow. The TDi150 had smaller rads and needed to be upgraded prior to towing.

The data plate shows the engine type as CUNA, which AFAIK is the 2.0TDI 184?

I've towed best part of a ton with my VRS tdi, it didn't break a sweat and can't ever say the oil temperatures got to levels which I was concerned about

They're very good tow cars. I tow a near 1600kg caravan with a 245 estate.
