Octavia MK2 2011 Estate brake discs

Featured Replies

Hi. Could anyone recommend the best quality front and rear brake discs & pads for a Mk2 Octavia estate 1.6 TDI estate.

I've been using Brembo which I would have thought would be good quality but the last two front sets have warped.

Any advice would be welcomed.

Thanks

I’d be looking at the pads and it’s very rare for discs to “warp” and more likely for pads to leave deposits.

The advice I received back when I had a mk2 was that if it was safe to do so, to try a few hard stops from 70 to 20 on an empty dual carriageway.  If there are pad deposits, this should reduce them.

That said, what symptoms are you seeing that makes you think your discs are “warped”

Main causes for warping are the drive flange which the bolts screw Into is not cleaned correctly causing an uneven surface. You really need to clean all corrosion off it. Other cause could be a wheel bearing. I've had wheel bearings cause it even though they don't feel rough or make any noise.

Try Ebc discs not cheap but excellent quality and manufactured in UK.

Hi. Thanks for the reply.

I've had 3 sets of discs & pads on the car and each set seem to go the same way in about 6 months or so. My best description of the symptoms is that the car pushes back & forth to different severities more noticeable downhill. The pads have been taken off and the ends cleaned along with the caliper pad slots & greased to see if it cures it but it hasn't.. and each time the discs & pads are changed it cures it.

A mechanic also checked the car and suggested the brakes had got hot at some point to cause this and recommended fitting OEM discs. Even though I'd say that I drive quite conservatively.

Next time it happens try the stops if you can find somewhere safe.

Worth checking the wishbone bushes , faces of the hub etc too (as mentioned by another poster)

Never had problems with warping, but hot pads will leave deposits on discs (for example hard stop or lots of braking)  then standing on the brakes rather than using the handbrake.

It might be worth checking if one side gets hotter than the other side after a drive as it might be a start of a seized caplier

I have another issue now as the engine management light came on today, the car still drives but I'm a bit worried about driving it over the weekend but I can't get it checked until Monday!

Check the manual, if it’s the DPF light there are instructions and you need to take the car out and follow those instructions.

Thankyou. I did a code read today and it came up as to check glow plug circuit no. 4.

I had a look at it tonight and found the lower part of the plug had broken off and brittle and I also spent quite a lot of time cleaning the muck from around the plug before trying to change it.

Mine doesn't get that much use these days. The car slightly more, but anyway, discs.... Have Pagid rears that have been OK but pick up lots of deposits from the handbrake (you must use matching pads with these or they're terrible). I did have Brembos (discs and pads) on the front that probably had between 15k and 20k on them. Definitely warped. No issue with the hubs or clean backplates, definitely the discs. Not a lot, but enough to feel under braking. Swapped them out and back to fine-and-dandy.
