Cruise Control - dropping gears

Featured Replies

I have an automatic and recently when I initiate cruise control it is dropping a gear, and the rev counter increases. Has anybody else experienced this? What did you do to correct it?

Why would you "correct it"? A modern cruise control is a "speed control", not just an "engine revs control".

Welcome to the Forum.

I too am a bit unsure what you mean.

If you are doing the speed you desire and set cruise control, i wouldn't expect anything to change. But if you are setting cruise control to say 70 when you are going slower it would not be unusual for the car to drop a  gear and accelerate.

The DSG will change gears on cruise if the load on the engine demands it, it's normal behaviour.

I’ve had the car 10 years and it’s done 110k miles now and it has only started doing this in the last 2 weeks. As Stonehouse described it happens when I’ve reached 70 on a motorway and engage cruise control to continue at that speed. There’s no incline in the road or change in the engine power needed or anything but within about 10 seconds the DSG automatically changes from 6th gear to 5th and stays there with much higher revs. I’ve tried speeding up in cruise control to see whether it switches back to 6th but it doesn’t. It says in 5th whatever speed. I can override it by switching to manual and it stays in 6th but I don’t want to have to do that all the time. I’m wondering whether a gearbox oil change will sort it? Thanks for your thoughts.

ZF Transmissions (I mean what do they know about auto and automated manual boxes? ;) ) recommend changing oil in these boxes about every 40_000.
