Engine interference on Stream in vRS...

Featured Replies

Getting a faint whine in line with engine revs through the stereo in my new Octy.

Quiet piece of music, cranked to hear it over all that road noise, get the whine.

Anyone else get this? Listening to "normal" music of a popular nature it's not noticable...

I have noticed this on a few occassions but it's so feint that I havn't reported it as I had felt it was worth it.

Think it may be through the autochanger. Cabling needs better shielding perhaps...?

You have a bad earth somewhere in the stereo system. Used to happen when i was a kid in my "boyracer" days ;)

Let the dealers sort it for you, i wouldnt like to tackle the modern car wiring looms.

It's very slight, and through a little non-scientific testing only seems to occur when using the changer and not the head unit. Would this also be consistent with a bad earth / alternator noise?

Cheers,

Yeah it could be.

The whole of a car shares a common ground, eg the car body and battery. So if the altenator is putting out a lot of noise to it the changer or head unit could be picking up on some of that noise easily. If the changer pics up on it then it would get along with the decoded signal to the h/unit and the noise will get amplified.

That is assuming the Changer decodes the CD and sends it analog rather than a nice digital link.

If it's under warrenty give the dealer a kick first call IMHO.

The changer sends an analogue audio signal to the Head unit and after installing my mp3 player and dab adapter in the boot I can confirm that the nearside of the car at the rear for some reason is more susceptible to interference than the off side. I reckon there's a problem with the shielding or earthing on your changer. Leave it to the dealer.

Must be coz it came from Motorpoint! - mine doesn't do it

Having said that Skoda are replacing the stream with the Audience unit in most models.

You got me mixed up with someone else, mate :)

My Avatar is a pic of my then-new-now-just-under-a-week old waiting for me to pick it up from my local dealer.

Are you sure yours doesn't do it? It's well faint but I do have an over developed sensitivity to these things. CDs in head unit are fine, just get the noise through the changer.

Mind you, if Skoda wanna change it for an MP3 cd playing head unit I'll be happy...

Yeah i also get a faint high pitched whine on my Stream, although it is more noticeable on "home recorded CD's".

You could try this to make sure it just to give yourself a bit of an idea.

Go buy a value roll of aluminium foil and wrap it around the CD changer on the sides and underneath etc, if you can see any cable at the rear do it around that.

Now it and see if that helps as that should provide some shielding to the changer so you can confirm it isn't just interference and must be either through the wire or the earth or head unit.

Also see if it does it with the engine off to try and track down the source of interference if it is that.

Basically I'd give it to the dealer, but this would let you find out some things for youself at the great cost of about 24p and an hour of your time.

Just tested it on another Octy II with same stereo, did exactly the same thing. My verdict - it's just how they are and no fault on my unit.

Will try the foil thing, tho :)

Hi

I have an Octy 2 2.0L 4x4 with a Stream radio and 6 x CD autochanger in the boot and I have the same problem that I was going to report, but like you felt that it is a minor niggle with a very decent car.

I am changing the unit with an MFD2 Sat Nav system so I will let you know if this changes anything, this will let us know if it is a fault with the Stream head unit or the autochanger/wiring.

I'll be back

Hmm just thinking somebody said the CD changer not the head unit contains the DAC for the CD Audio to analog.

Just wondering if the power into the CD changer is noisey, therefore causing noise to be put into the power input for the DAC and therfore sent down with the analog sound.

It would mean that possibly the filtering and caps on the input circutiary for the power supply to the CD changer are a bit suspect or that the power being sent from the head unit isn't clean.

Just a thought and I may be wrong, but it's a bit of a stab in that direction.
