VRS Estate MPG/Fuel Economy

I've had my VRS TDI estate for a few months. The absolute maximum mpg I've achieved is 43mpg. It'll typically get 37-39 with one low of 34. It's very mixed driving but in honesty there's been a good bit of driving poor rural roads and a number of 30-40 mile runs each week.

 

I had my mechanic run diagnostics on it and everything came up clear. He said he's not surprised with the fuel economy but suggested there's a chance the injectors are showing (very) early stages of overfuelling. 

 

Am I overestimating what I should be getting or should I be looking for higher mpg?  If I was getting 45 (as with my old VRS saloon) I'd be very happy.

Did you get the dpf checked out by your man? Your previous thread mentioned high idle after runs and I think the fans staying on which are early signs of regeneration issues.

Ya he said the dpf was in good condition and that it was regen'ing fine. The fan does run though almost every time it's on the road. 

I have MK3 VRS estate and my average MPG would be very similar to yours, its generally around 43mpg over a full tank. 

If I reset the counter and then head on a long drive I might get up to 47/48, but daily driving is about 43.

I'd be about 60:40 motorway/ town driving

That's pretty reassuring thanks. I do a lot of driving on poor rural roads so maybe my expectations are a little high. I'll do a day of longer runs to test and will feed back. 

A good first step - would be to go find some Super Diesel and fill up the tank.  Then do a long and fast run with the car and then see if this improves the performance and stops the constant re-gen that is potentially happening.  The super diesel will also help clean out the EGR and any gunk in the injectors too.

Your current mpg sounds reasonable given your driving conditions and the fact that it's a TDI estate. If you're seeing 37-39 mpg regularly, you're not far off. Early-stage injector issues could affect fuel economy, so keeping an eye on it is wise. If you aim for 45 mpg like your old saloon, it might be optimistic unless the driving conditions are more favorable. I assume your car hasn't had a remap?

Are your tyre pressures correct, you're not running on very low PSI?

Do you drive around with very heavy load in the car, a lot of tools or whatever in the boot? Do you usually have a car full of passengers?

Have you got some sort of aerodynamic issues, like something attached to the roof causing wind resistance?

 

Beyond that, unless you drive with your accelerator full to the floor, I would say you should be looking for higher MPG than that.

(For comparison, my long term average 45mpg, and I drive a remapped 2.0 TSI. Max single journey MPG was 59mpg, but that was a particularly economical run.)

On two days recent I drove long runs - about 100 miles each way on each occasion. 

 

For the first run the dash was showing 46mpg but when I checked the actual consumption it was 37mpg. The second showed 47 on the dash and 38 in reality. 

 

The boot has a few bits, nothing with any weight. Nothing on the roof, tyre pressure okay. 

 

A friend mentioned something about a sensor in the exhaust that can result in pulling extra fuel if it's clogged, but I don't know anything about it. 

 

Haven't a clue at this stage!

That is a surprising level of error for the fuel computer - my indicated use when compared against actual calculated use is usually around 2 to 3 MPG lower (computer reads optimistic)
