Whining noise when steering sharp right or left

Featured Replies

Hi

Recently bought a 2014 Fabia.

Need to diagnose steering noise problem before the warranty is up.

The mechanic says it might just be one of those things you have to live with 🙄

It's a whining noise,  but not high pitched. Can only hear it at slower speed, turning sharp right or left (like when pulling into a parking space).

Seems to be getting louder as time goes on.

Any thoughts?

Mine does the same. Someone else here had this problem and after a bit of investigation, the garage told them it was the steering pump and not an issue. It cheered me up.

If your model has a power steering pump check the fluid level and condition.

Yeah, I think it's electronic, so can't check fluid 🤷‍♀️

I can't speak from direct experience of an electronic steering setup but in general terms when a motor is used to move something (i.e. your steering rack) there will need to be some means of limiting the movement at the limits of travel.  It could be a mechanical stop but is more likely in this case to be some form of sensor to signal to the car controller that the steering has reached the limit of turn.  If said sensor is either not functioning or is functioning incorrectly it may not be accurately showing the limit point, in which case the controller would still be applying power to the steering motor and trying to force it past the stop point.

Practically speaking I would try to get a scan from your car and see if you're getting any (helpful) error messages.

I suspect you could be looking at item 10 (swing angle sensor) on the parts diagram HERE.

Thanks very much Mike... that all makes perfect sense.

🤔 It doesn't sound like the noise that's made when you turn the wheel to its limit. It's different. But it could still be the cause/ problem.

And that would probably make sense in terms of it not being a problem that 'must' be fixed.

Thank you muchly 🙏

Just in case it's not obvious, the whining noise will be from the motor on the hydraulic pump (item 1) and not the sensor.

@Triff As others, my reaction was that this sounds pretty normal for an electric or electro-hydraulic PAS.

Thanks.  It's not the sound you get at steering lock left or right.

I didn't explain it properly on my first post 🙄...

I tested it driving in a circle (but not fully turning the wheel). It's like a honing noise.

The steering is quite soft, so doubtful that it's fluid related but I'll live with it for now as, from the replies, it doesn't sound like something to worry about.

Many thanks all for the advice/ info 🙏
