Rear spring confusion VRS 230

Featured Replies

Hi all,a bit confused with what rear springs I need for my 2016 vrs 230.

Skoda have given me a part number of 5q0511115q whereas on most sites that comes up as for a combi/estate.

If I manually try and find the part number i.e. select vrs 230 and hatchback I get part number 5Q0511115P

Does anyone know what it should be?

Unsurprisingly, what Skoda told you is correct. £98 plus VAT each for genuine from Skoda. Approx the same including the VAT if you go to LLL parts.

Sachs 994 925 rear springs match 5Q0511115R, not 5Q0511115Q...so is a slightly longer and stiffer spring than 5Q0511115Q.

You might find that your rear end is slightly higher than before and slightly harder.

KYB, Kilen, and Lesjofors all correctly identified your rear spring as 5Q0511115Q in their online spring catalogues.

KYB RA7156, Kilen 63142, and Lesjofors 4285743 rear springs should all match 5Q0511115Q exactly

https://www.autodoc.co.uk/car-parts/oem/5q0511115q?supplier[]=85&supplier[]=246&supplier[]=253

Notice below, that KYB sells one spring for 5Q0511115Q and one spring for 5Q0511115R. Although they both have 11.25mm wire diameters, the stiffer 5Q0511115R spring has less coil turns...which is why it is stiffer. The lower number of coil turns is reflected in the weight, ie. 1.6kg for the stiffer spring versus 1.7kg for the softer spring.

KYB RA7156 rear spring (matches 5Q0511115Q) (1.7kg) (about 7.8 coil turns)

KYB RA7157 rear spring (matches 5Q0511115R) (1.6kg) (about 7.3 coil turns)

Does this mean the listing on Sachs in incorrect then as they are showing 994925 as being the same as 5Q0511115Q although also listing it at the same time as 5Q0511115R

If you look up the OE part number on the KYB site it shows as RA7156 which then matches the specs although 3mm shorter and 100g lighter than Sachs 994925.

The pictures are different, however not sure if they just use a stock picture.

It almost looks as if Sachs might have made a product which caters for both part numbers as it seems to be 'in the middle' in terms of spec between Q and R.

Yeah, the aftermarket suppliers will clump together stuff to reduce the number of distinct items they need to make and stock.

Sounds about right bud to try and save on costs.

Debating if to send the sachs ones back and go for KYB instead.

Aftermarket spring brands often disagree on the exact specification of an OEM part number.

It looks like the specification of the Sachs 994 925 rear spring is somewhere between the KYB RA7156 and KYB RA7157, so you might not notice much difference to what you have now.

There's always a little bit of risk involved with aftermarket springs as to exactly what you will get, because the actual springs don't always exactly match the specification that the manufacturer gives, such as being a few millimetres different from the quoted length, etc...and sometimes they make big mistakes.

Sachs 994 925 rear springs (from the photo it looks like there are about 7.5 coil turns) (actual photo, not generic)

Really appreciate your help on this Carlston. I'll whip the old springs out and compare them against the Sachs ones. I have a motor factors close to me which can get the KYB ones in same day, so if they are quite far out I'll just go for the KYBs.

I did email Sachs and they basically said that the 925s fit both the Q and R part number (as you mentioned before) but didn't really answer my question as to why other suppliers have different parts numbers for the Q and R.

Thanks for your help once again :)
