Car locked with key inside Beware

Featured Replies

Hi All

Just a quick warning to those with KESSY .

I recently found myself locked out of my Octavia in Scotland, 400 miles from the spare key.

I had transferred the fob from trouser pocket to fleece pocket and forgot this as I but fleece in the boot to go for a forest walk.

Returned to the forest car park to find I was locked out - scary moment.

Fortunately had a phone signal - Recovery say will have to activate airbags and damage to car likely.

Try the App (sh!t I never activated the lock/unlock feature via the dealer)

Best try a Locksmith.

Long story short, amazing guy managed to "pick" lock with "master keys" took best part of an hour.

No damage to car only my wallet.

Hmmm...

A scary moment indeed, but I thought it wasn't supposed to do that.

So pleased you managed to get it unlocked to continue your trip (albeit with reduced funds which were no doubt much needed for a wee dram, or three).

I actually tried locking the car with the key still inside and it wouldn't lock so it definitely should be impossible to lock yourself out....... The only thing i can think in the OPs case is that he says he left the keys in the boot rather than in the cockpit around the key storage pocket so maybe the car didn't realise the keys were inside due to them being away from the storage pocket.

Also another reason to make sure you have the app setup when you get the car just in case you do leave the keys in the boot etc.....

There are threads in the Kodiaq & Karoq section where members cars have been having a Service Campaign / Recall action so as not to have their keys locked in the car.  Software Update.

Yes I was surprised it allows this as the car should detect the key surely.

i haven't tried again but if key is in a sports bag or jacket and you but in the boot out of sight then this obviously can happen.

Definitely worth having the app as a back up or the spare key in your partners possession if you have a partner.

Yeah, unfortunately my car is an early build Mk4 - and it doesn’t support lock/unlock with the app ☹️

I’ll have to try putting one of the keys in the boot and see what happens…

Worst case, I’ll disable KESSY.

Thank you @GrumpyOldGit for highlighting the potential issue.

added final para.

It happened to me too last year.  I have an Australian market 2021 Mk4 VRS wagon.  After tennis training,  I left my key in a bag pack in the car boot and got locked out when I shut the boot before unlocking the doors.  I was en route to a tennis final match with my team mates waiting at another club so i was panicking big time as my spare keys had flat battery too when i got it later.  I managed to get in eventually via the front passenger side with the spare key fob emergency key.  First time doing it so it's not easy when I was flustered. What a pain and stressful episode.

I can also confirm it's possible, I managed to lock them in the boot of my estate when I forgotten that I'd put my keys in my coat and left it in the boot.

I can unlock the car via the app, but that's dependant on a mobile signal and unfortunately there wasn't one, so we also had to have the lock picked.

Thanks for the replies, glad I wasn't the only one.

Still worth having the app as an extra back up but as you say depends on a mobile signal.

I think I read you have 2 minutes to re-open the boot before it locks if you've put your keys in there.

Haven't tried but key should be detected in the main seated areas of the car and not lock.

Hopefully won't make that mistake again.

As a somewhat unconscious habit, I've always carried the key fob in my trouser pocket, in and out of the car. Now I'm reading about this issue, I think I've probably mitigated the lock-out experience as a result.

Even Mrs B’s lowly Nissan Note won’t let you lock the car with the keys anywhere in the car, including the boot.

But having said that, imo, the OP’s first mistake was leaving the spare key at home on that sort of trip
