Question for engine knocking sound

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Can somebody help what can cause knocking sound which it does not appear all the time but after some driving and only in idle state, that is when the clutch is released and car is in idle state. As I can hear it looks like it comes from the right side of the engine but not completely sure. I've provided videos for more information. The car dealer said that is some default factory fault for all fabia mark 3 engines, but i'm not sure on that. The engine is 1.0 MPI 44 KW for more details.

The 1.0 mpi engines suffer from flywheel rattle. Dealerships describe it as a "characteristic" of the vehicle.

It often sounds worse than it is and never failed on my previous vehicle during my ownership from 30 to 60k miles. Just noise at idle, nothing more.

I did however have the timing belt tensioner fail at 55k miles, which made quite a racket as the belt slapped around inside the housing. Luckily it didn't jump a tooth... As it's easy to access and check, you could take a look for peace of mind and to confirm it isn't this that you are hearing.

EDIT:

Just to add, my current vehicle makes a similar rattle at idle (albeit quieter than the last one) and it's not something I worry about.

HTH 👍

Our younger daughter and her husband hired a Peugeot 208 GT (badged as GT but probably GT-Line) when they were up in August, when it started up from cold, it made some serious "clacking" noises - probably flywheel/clutch related, I would not have expected that from a 6 month old 20,000mile car - but, the sound insulation worked so well that none of that noise was heard inside that car.
