Error help on '66 plate Octavia 2.0 SE (deisel)

Featured Replies

Hi All, I really need some help from anyone prepared to share any solid advice.......

I have an Octavia 2.0 ltr SE Deisel which for some time has thrown up a flashing coil symbol on the dash randomly when driving.

It's not there all the time, it will randomly trigger when driving occasionally sometimes when the turbo is boosting or when the engine is under load but sometimes does not happen at all even under harsh acceleration. When it does trigger It puts the car into some kind of limp mode almost as though it has stopped the turbo from working until the ignition is turned off and back on.  When you turn off and on the fault light goes away and the car continues to really drive well.  I have noticed that the fault code happens less when the oil has got upto temperature.

The car has high mileage around 177k, however it has been serviced regular.....it's an ex company car and most the miles on motorways.  It's always had regular oil changes its had a new battery, new clutch and dual mass flywheel, and more recently in the quest to solve the problem under the advice of a local garage had a new oil pump, new EGR valve, oil pressure sensors and yet the problem still exists.  (Those jobs were done under advice from a local indipendant garage who I and the company have used for years, they didn;t charge me for the new EGR, oil pressure sensors or labour as they drew a blank on fixing it) The OBD fault code I'll add later on this evening however if memory serves me correctly it pointed in the direction of oil pressure.

The engine sounds a sweet as a nut and pulls very well 98% of the time, it's as though there is some sort of failing sensor somwhere causing the ECU to trigger limp mode. There is not smoke coming out the rear, the DPF is clear too.

The car is not worth a great deal anymore especially with the high mileage so I'm at a crossroads.... sell it on cheap and let someone else sort it if at all. Although ideally I'd like to find the problem and sort it out depending on the outlay for parts.  The car is too good to scrap and likley that the issue is something silly.........

The garage that had the car also had a friend of theirs who is VAG trained look at it along with plugging it into some VAG dealer software and they could not find the issue.  In the end it was suggested that there was some internal engine fault or that potentially the ECU was faulty. Both are expensive gambles to roll with on a whim or guess.

It should be throwing up a fault code. You need to get that read.

I used a relatively inexpensive OBD tool just today and it doesn't detect any codes even if I use the reader as I drive and the Coil light starts flashing and the car is in limp mode.  I figured it may be a body control issue as opposed to the engine.

Its been read properly and as I mentioned a VAG trained person has plugged it in to their software and drew a blank...

I have noticed that the amount of times that it trips into limp mode is far far less after the oil is upto temperature........ Wondering if that could potentially be a valuable clue in detecting what the issue is.
