AAAGH ! Sump Gone ?

Featured Replies

Hit a big rock today at about 40 mph (this happens to me all the time, the kind of roads I drive on - yeah, I should have got a 4x4, I know !), thought nothing of it, got into the car tonight to drive home, got the oil warning light and beeper, stopped, saw the massive pool of oil in my parking space !

Had a look under the car with a torch, hard to see exactly where it's coming from, but the drip is landing right under the middle of the engine block.

So I'm guessing I've cracked the sump, and as I wait for the man from the AA, I wonder how much money that's going to sting me ? :(

Even 4x4 owners have cracked sumps, y'know... :D

Including labour ? That's not as bad as I thought ! :)

The AA man just called to say he's nearly here so I'll report back tomorrow - Ta !

is that just a rough guess jon?

would have needed to be ben nevis to crack the sump on a 4x4.. although one 4x4 owner was telling me that his vehicle is not desinged for off road use... so i assume the std suspension is setup to satisfy thrill seekers looking for the ultimate in near death experiences....?

Pressumably Erik at AAT could supply you with a sump guard if rocks are a regular feature of your driving experience....

They are available from your friendly Skoda dealer as well.

Mine is on order. :D

I'll report back as no-one knows what its made of

Yeah, but you've really got to be trying some to do it :D

At least it only got cracked not ripped clean off - and my wonderful dealer repaired it.

I managed to destroy the sump on my old 2L Octy. Got airborn off a hump-back bridge. Only cost me 180 quid including fitting and vat though.

I don't actually know when \ how I did it, all I can guess is that I was smiling at the time, there were scrapes indicating it had touched road not a single rock etc.

Very common problem on all VAG cars.

Used to get alot of Leon's and Toledo's in with damaged sumps.

One guy brought his Cupra in with a crank and pedal from a pushbike wedged in the sump...that had me a little worried tbh.

Hit a raised man-hole cover (new estate so no tarmac laid yet) in my old Octy TDi estate.....nice dent and crack in the sump. Didn't notice anything wrong for a few months as the oil was being caught in the under engine tray. Cost
