Driveshaft Bolts

Featured Replies

Seems a daft question but cannot seem to find any info about the outer driveshaft retaining bolt on my 2019 Skoda Fabia 1.0 TSI  110 BHP 6 speed , I keep seeing the normal type bolts with the blank end, the nuts that are threaded and have locking tabs but mine has the large 36mm outer socket size and looks like a threded hole in the middle of the bolt, I did see a vid on u tube and the guy held a new bolt up but can't seem to find one on the internet ,asked at main dealers guess what you need to bring te car in for us to check or bring the old one in a bit hard with the last one as don't fancy driving the car with the driveshaft bolt in my pocket some one must know the part number or where to get them from, will be changing a cv boot shortly and wanted a new bolt thanks in advance

It should still be a large (36mm) 12 pointed nut that has built in/on locking tangs, so that means you need a slim(ish) 36mm BiHex socket if working on it.

Buy one from any VW Group dealer's parts department, 6Q0 407 396 B Double Hex Nut M16 X 1.5

Edit:- extra info - "they cost more than a fiver!"

This part and  does not fit my car as posted  it's a type of bolt bolt not a nut there are no locking tabs it looks like a mushroom type bolt with a thread in the centre that screws onto the driveshaft, typed the part number in and as stated it's a nut with locking tabs not fitted on my cars sorry

This sounds a bit different or weird, I've checked for Fabias from at least 2015 build up to 2025 build, and the only item securing the the outer end of the drive shaft to the hub, is the nut that I listed above, and also, this is the nut that has been used since at least 2002 build.

One curious thing or anomaly is, for the 2024 build Fabia with an auto trans only, the parts diagram shows that item as being a bolt, but still lists it as being the nut I listed earlier. Edit:- same for VW Polo with 7 speed DSG, for that car the parts diagram even shows the end of the shaft does not had a male threaded section - then shows a nut and it has the same part number as above!

This really needs a picture taking to let us see what is in/on there.

Gave the hub centre part a good clean today and it does seem that the so called bolt might actually be a nut but  the tags must be on the inside of the nut as you cannot see any of the tags showing the shaft was a flush fit right up to the ede of the nut centre  so it did look like it was actually a bolt with a large double hex surround, I only have a six sided socket so will get the correct one before going ahead with the removal of the joint to replace the rubber boot, sorry for confusion but even on Autodoc when i put my car details in they came back with this nut did not fit my model ., it does have the 6 speed gearbox and thought this was the problem thanks again

Yes, if you check up online, the tangs are hidden once the nut is fitted.

My original 1/2" sqr drv socket set is all BIHex so good for use on these 12 pointed nuts - though I've been, over the years adding in as many Hex sockets as they should protect the nuts and bolt heads better - I even had to buy/add an extra BiHex socket to that old socket set for when I replace a lower suspension link arm on my 2011 Audi S4 as VW Group thought it a great idea to use a 12 point nut on the TREs! - as 21mm does not seem to have been a popular size of socket when I first added metric sockets to that old 1/2" sqr drv socket set!

One comment about these drive shaft nuts, I've only taken 5 of these nuts off, some come off without damaging the locking tangs, some come off and the tangs have broken off, today's hub nut took a few attempts from my impact wrench, the locking tangs were still there but heavily marked - I'd fitted them a couple of years ago when I replaced the front wheel bearings, I hadn't expected that one today to put up that much of a fight - shows the locking element on that nut was really doing its job!
