Early oil change - should I? - opinions?

4k miles on the new vRS now but I can't help but worry about swarf etc floating around the engine, potentially for the next 16k miles.

Am I getting my panties in a bunch for no reason? I am thinking of doing an oil change at 6k miles and then just going with the flow.

Anyone else done this, or thinking of doing this?

Thinking of it myself actually (3k on fabia vrs)

Assuming i do the early change myself, would it void warranty as i've put my own hands on the motor, so to speak?

Obviously if I didnt screw the filter on properly, engine dumped its oil and motor seized I'd not try to claim on it! ;)

Is the engine iol filter a drop in the top of the engine type?

If so why not just change that since most crud gets caught in the filter rather than the oil. If you change the oil for too long you won't run the engine in whioch could lead to higher oil consumption and other issues in later life. I guess you could have the first service done a bit early, eg at the mkinimum time rather than when the engine asks.

Even those (like Honest John) who strongly advocate oil & filter changes as frequently as 5k miles in some circs.say leave the factory fill in for the first 10k or first year.

Just had my first annual service [2.0FSI] at 8700 miles. Talked to a very down-to-earth service manager [skoda specialist, - NOT main dealer] and we agreed that the long life fully synthetic was a waste of time for my kind of motoring.

After a detergent oil flush, he used 5W-40 semi synthetic BUT he stressed it actually was a semi, i.e. 50/50. He said some so-called semis are only 10 or 20% synthetic.

He also said he hated the look of some engines drained at over 20,000 miles on the long life stuff - looked terrible.

Finally, several engineers have told me the new engines don't run in properly on fully synthetic, the bores and rings glaze etc. So I'm sticking with a good semi and changing it [relatively] often.

Fluff[/quote']I had an extra oil change at 2K miles to dump the crud, then stuck to the normal regime. Car has now done 40K miles and uses about 0.7 litres of oil per 10K miles, which seems about right to me.

Which is the sort of thing I am looking at doing, I do about 20k a year so will be on annual servicing for the life of the car (3 years).

Only if you're set on fixed servicing: otherwise, it's when the deterioration of the oil generates a warning (variable servicing). If you do as I do, ie change oil & filter every 6-7K, the variable servicing thingie (help, Lummox!!) won't trigger, so you have to (ahem) tell a little white lie to get it serviced (if it's a lease car), saying that your little spanner is illuminated when you start up..............good luck! But, like one of the other correspondents, there is no way that I will leave oil for 20K-ish miles........... Go for it: mine hardly uses any oil now, after 24K miles in a year, except that, as the synthetic stuff ages, it seems to evaporate: very strange, so after about 5K miles, I have to add about 1Litre. If I change at the 5K point, no need....... funny, that!

If it makes you feel and sleep better change it,its a small price to pay for a good nights sleep lol.Oil is very good these days change at 5000 is overkill if swarf is a worry after 5000 the damage is done but thats what oil filters are for.I would not leave oil 20000 miles though sounds way too long i think 10000 is a pretty good marker.As for bedding engine in give it some stick from zero milles its the only chance you got of bedding in the piston and rings.

I would not use a detergent oil flush between normal oil changes because it is impossible to get all of that oil out of the engine having done so - and what is left will degrade the effectiveness of the new oil. And given that modern oils are formulated to have excellent detergent properties, extra flushes should not be necessary between oil changes. I see this as a money spinner for garages, along with the oil treatments some put in as a routine when a car is serviced.

The variable service has time and mileage limits, with early deterioration of the oil reducing the maximum limits.

Just had mine serviced after 13,000 miles and changed the oil (quite literally) from the VAG stuff to Castrol Edge 5W-30. Keeping it on variable service intervals despite an anual mileage of 25,000 miles, not sure if this is the best regime for me or not but will see how it goes.

the engine is designed for variable servicing, so why not take advantage of the technology.

oh and Steve to answer your question a while ago about my servie costs, I can't give you that bit yet, but my advance warning came on at 16,500, so it will be booked in the next few weeks.
