Steering wheel spacer in my Felicia

Featured Replies

This is how my Felicia steering wheel looked like in the past.

ScreenShot_20241020183134.png.a88a7c68fa8b07df3110fc9f15d19d6f.png

Actually had no airbag and the central console was a bit different.

I had the factory steering wheel replaced with another after market, it ruined and i have change it and did it another time.

The main problem was that every after market steering wheel was siting much lower than the factory one, you can see in the photo that the gauges are visible.

Here is a patent that i have done in the past, the photos are not good quality but you can take an idea.

I kept the cone from the previous steering wheel

and the front part and kept it to use it as a spacer.

You can see the old configuration of the dashboard and the central console.

T-(2).JPG.688e204fac802596e90aed3cd865701b.JPG

I worked in the holes to make them wider

T-(3).JPG.dc677fab8e3ee5bc4bc157f4f7541867.JPG

and i used the allen screws that the new steering wheel had in the package

although i don't like them.

I will show you with a proper photo the difference, of course it's not like the original but it's better than the previous steering wheel.

oem looks in place

A bit ugly, not good for Sport driving, slippery, horn button with slack-squeek noise.

Proper only for hitting it (nervous) in the centre in very tough traffic situations.

As always it is each to their own, to me that steering wheel isn't pretty, it would look marginally better with the black screws rather than the stainless steel, but also, it looks too close to driver and too far from column stalk, the wheel rim is far too thick, matt black spokes would look better and I don't like the ribbed column extender, but it's not my car and I don't drive it.

Matter of taste, but fits Felicias interior and it's not as ugly as wannabe sport wheels

It's same PUR crap as the one you got there instead... If you want non-slipper steering wheel, at least get a leather one.

I never noticed a squeaky noise, but liked that horn button is right under the thumb and easy to push. A little button in the middle is second worst thing after horn on the wiper lever.

Anyway, since you don't need to care about airbag, you have pretty wide selection of VW steering wheels, which have better build quality and can be found quite cheap. An Ibiza 6k2 steering wheel with non-airbag center cover would fit pretty well.

The difference in sound of the horn at the steering wheel would surely be that of it's connection which could easily be improved.

You chaps seem to treat the horn like it's a new toy at Xmas, over here you should rarely hear a horn sounded, it's meant to be used to let others know the car is there or approaching, say coming up to a very narrow humpback bridge where forward sight of the road ahead is lost and you don't want to literally bump into something coming the other way.  It's not supposed to be used just to show your emotions of the moment to others or join in with others sounding their horns out of frustration.

The horn in my old 'daily' car was used so infrequently that I used to occasional sound it just to stop it seizing up and test it was working in case I needed to use it and before annual MoTs, for the reason of parts availability at one time it was a heavy-duty momentary toggle switch on the side dash panel and as I was so used to it being there I left it there when the missing parts for the steering wheel connection became available.  Th car had twin horns, high note and low note from factory one without the other didn't sound right if the connection got crude'd up from the position of the horns at the front and when one of them failed when the connector spade broke off.

I don't use the horn to show emotions. Not sure how it's elsewhere, but in Czechia it's allowed to honk on the overtaken car to gain attention - and unfortunately it's needed quite often here, when there's no line in the center of the road, because the same people who are likely to drive slowly also tend to move away from the edge of the road and not paying attention to the traffic behind at the same time.

But that's not the case I talked about, what I wanted to say is, that easy to reach horn button can make difference between innatentive pedestrian, who's running right in front of your car, getting a bit scared, or rolled over by your car - that's my personal experience... People can be unpredictable and sounding the horn at the same time when you're doing evasion maneuver can gain needed attention. But you can hardly do that if you need to get a hand off the steering wheel to sound it.

On a car with a 15.5" (395 mm) thin-rimmed steering wheel your hand comes off the steering wheel to push the factory horn position in the centre of the steering wheel, actually easier and faster to move the hand to the side dash.

I'm glad you are doing the evasion then horn rather than the other way round, often there is the time to sound the horn there is the time to get out of the way without the need to sound the horn.

I have seen neighbours from Eastern-Europe walk down the middle of the road even if there are clear pedestrian pavements either side of the road with dropped-kerbs for ease of wheelchairs, pushchairs and those with walking difficulties, one a young family with pushchair and very young children regularly walk down the middle of our home road despite the two pedestrian pavements, luckily our road is quiet and locals are patient but we also sometimes get delivery drivers in a rush and on their phones.  I've tried to explain to the lady but she doesn't speak English

Just for info over here sounding the horn (or flashing the headlights) to overtake would be often considered as harassment and aggressive and intimidating driving and might encourage road-rage.   I am not saying that does not happen here, but it is not allowed as such, an emergency service vehicle is accepted.  We have plenty of roads without centre lines and those not paying attention drifting down the middle, you just have to put your indicator on and edge out a bit and hope they look in one of their rear view mirrors.  The older cars were narrower than the wide heavy modern cars so I could often move fully out which would make my car more noticeable and fit the space without the other car needing to get closer to the nearside verge which the driver often has trouble judging hence being so far from it.

It's the 3rd aftermarket wheel that i have, i have use to them all these years and i never liked the factory one.

This is 320mm which means a little bit tougher to handle but it helps me a lot in the turns, has positions for thumbs and is not slippery.

Those 2 grooves in ''10 to 2'' position are very helpful, sometimes in the highway i rest my middle fingers on them.

I can reach normaly the two levers as in the factory, take a look the original is not flat, that after market cone is just to cover the space and i bought it many years ago ''for Felicia''.

I don't push the horn often so the centre button is OK plus you can install another badge so it looks ''cool''.

That's up to you, I do it for the response mostly. I don't care about power

Your steering wheel looks out of place period.

It's a bone stock felicia with a ricer wheel. Doesn't look nice.

It's not a full group N rallycar

Here in GR they sold it back then as one of the extras, was in the Sport section together with suspensions, muffler etc.

If i remember correct the price was about 80.000 drachmas or 235 € today.

150.000 was a base salary and 170.000 drachmas was a good salary back in 1999

which Felicia owner had the ability to give 80.000 for a Momo steering wheel?

First steering wheel would be an obsolete NO from me, and for style to match car dash and interior, let alone the horrible large Father-brand badge and centre large surrounding that looks like loudspeaker grille effect in that photo.  The major Germany marques interior styling is never generally to my taste.  Second steering wheel , yeah may be, I could perhaps get used to it but the first I would dislike every tine I saw it.  But as always each to their own, what would happen if we all like the same things.

Interestingly it was VW who designed dashboard in Felicia and the original steering 4-spoke wheel comes directly from 6N Polo.

Unfortunately outside of chinesium and the rare Momo wheel, there aren't many alternatives to the original steering wheel that don't come from VW.

This steering wheel comes in various styles, sleeker non-airbag version is a bit closer to the momo design:

But once you get airbag, it has to go somewhere. There was "sport" variant with fake spokes to mask the airbag bulge behind:

KIEROWNICA-SKORA-CUPRA-IBIZA-CORDOBA-94-01-FELICJA.jpeg.d93ce5e05af7c3ee06035c5551b79ab6.jpeg

While standard variant, also available with Skoda badge, looked much fatter:

You're right, it's matter of taste. The Lupo variant is closest in style to modern sports cars, while also being period correct for Felicia. IMO it fits the rest of the interior. The badge in the centre can be swapped, as VW brands shared design between each other. The texture is in line with texture found on window switches, heater dials and window cranks. For reference, this is what original basic Skoda steering wheel looks like:

hq720.jpg.ed76331e7f9a0d34a9b5c56022df1151.jpg

Ironically probably the most exotic steering wheel that directly fits into Felicia comes from probably the least sporty VW of all time - magnesium alloy wheel from Lupo 3L:

Well, there was also 4-spoke steering wheel for Skoda Estelle/Favorit...

We had Škodas before VW took over (and well remember the quality drop when they did) so realised the Felicia was VW with some legacy Škoda.  The green Škoda centre badges lift appearance a bit but the steering wheels aren't easy on the eyes, the magnesium alloy wheel from Lupo 3L also wouldn't be my choice, even with a green Škoda centre badge.

I can't remember if the 4-spoke was in my wife's Favorit and certainly can't remember it being in my Estelle 2s - but then they were a long time ago and I have trouble recognising and remembering the old bloke in the mirror when I shave, miserable old-fart he looks.

I will fit this to the felicia so I will be driving the brelicia.

Or maybe I will keep it oem...

Because oem looks perfect

Because as you can see I take pride in my cars looking as they were supposed to be...

No ricing them out to think I'm in a sports car. I bough xyz because I wanted xyz if I didn't I would have bough something else....

Quality went up after VW takeover. First Favorits were awful, because Skoda was nearly bankrupt after it's development.

It's the opposite, Felicia is improved Favorit, with some VW parts thrown in. Some parts are better than VW, for example, the gearbox doesn't self-destruct with 1.6 and 1.9 engines, unlike the models where those engines came from.

It was optional - standard wheels were two-spoke, Favorit similar to Felicia.

You mean the Golf MK3 one? 😁 The leather found in sportline version is nice, the basic plastic is worse and the two-spoke was awful - every single one I drove had separated foam part from the frame.
