However, I think this is one of those topic where there's a considerable variance of opinion (watch this space ;) ).

I wrecked a Dunlop D5 Winter Sport on the 17" rims which I fit to my wife's 190 TDI Karoq in the season.  We replaced it with a new one without any issues.

Equally when a truck sideswiped one of her Tiguans a few years ago, the insurance would only run to one new tyre on that side when I was repaired by a VW dealership.

Again, that created no issues.

  • Whatever you do, do not run summers on the rear and anything more winter/all season targeted on the front.    It would likely be easy to lose the rear end in snow/ice.

  • Yes, the current CrossClimate 2 is still a good tyre. However....      ... Michelin nearly always cost more than the other top brands.  Many times in the past I have been happy to pay that p

Thanks both. I'd try to replace both tyres on the same axle and it's absolutely required in this instance.

I totally agree with the above. I put two vredestien winters on the front of my Karoq 2wd last winter and left the Bridgestone summers on the back, as they still had about 5mm. Thefirst time I encountered snow the car was almost undriveable wagging it's tail about like an over excited dog. Promptly went to tyre garage and bought two more vredestiens at £155 each and ditched the crap Bridgestones. The car behaves itself perfectly with 4 winters the same all round. My summer wheels need two tyres so there are 2 worn Michelin and two kormoran summer suv tyres which were on the rear. They will go on theffront and two new the same on the back.

As it is the OEM Bridgestone are sh1te even in high summer in the wet, let alone in cold / wet / snow.

I was biding my time to replace the OEM Bridgestones on my wife's MY23 Karoq but the time has now arrived.

Was expecting to go with the Michelins but have opted for 4xPirelli Cinturato All Season SF3, Got 15% discount for buying 4 tyres, Paid £573 incl home fitting and old tyre disposal.

My own MY22 will need replacements fairly soon too but in the meantime I have blagged her less worn Bridgestones. Got anotherfew mm of tread to play with for the time being :)

Might be a price to pay in longevity over the Michelins based on reviews but the SF3s appear to be good tyres.

Might take a wee while for me to see and judge any differences but will post an update when I can.

I am not a fan of Michelin Cross climates. I've just dumped mine, still with 3 to 4 mm, measured by the tyre shop. They were seriously perished between the treads and on the sidewalls. The date on them were 1221, so 4 years old. In that 4 years did 15k on the front of my yeti, then 12k on the karoq.

The Pirelli Cinturato All Season SF3 have proven to be effective over this winter, albeit we've not had such sustained low temperatures this year and minimum snow fall.

Good to hear

FWIW, we choose to put the new tyres on my wife's car for a few reasons.

Her journeys, albeit much less frequent than mine, are on the M3 and/or M25. Mine are more urban and shorter

Another reason is my car is still on a PCP until July this year. I'll probably keep it but I'm not going to fit new tyres and then then potentially give it up after 3-4 months.

Even so, I'd much rather she had better tyres to help ensure her safety when competing in Wacky Races on the motorway.

I know, it’s a different car and a 4x4, but I put Conti All Seasons on the Superb in December’22. Absolutely brilliant tyres and especially so in the small amount of snow with had in Jan 23 and outstanding in the much heavier stuff in Ireland that Feb. Quite amazing how much difference there was in the handling. And they’re soooo quiet compared to the original OE Pirelli P7’s they replaced (35k and on 3.5mm). The Contis have now covered 16k and they’re down to 5mm, so I should get 25-30k from them which I’d be really happy with given their softer compound. I’ll never go back to standard tyres again. I also put them on SWMBO’s Focus last year.
