Scala 1.0 110 PS Kangerooing 6 speed manual

Featured Replies

Hello,

I think this has been brought up here before but can't find it...

Got our Scala two months ago, 2nd hand from a Skoda dealer - still got a couple of years of warranty. From day one the clutch was quite different from the Rapid we had before and thought we'd just get used to it. On the whole we have and really like the car. Where we are still struggling is starting off. It's very difficult to start smoothly and reliably in first gear. Tried high revs, low revs, feathering clutch more. It just wants to have a massive dip in revs and drop in speed once the clutch is fully up in first gear and thus kangaroos frequently. I thought I just needed to practise but have been to an empty car park and it still seems very temperamental. I've read elsewhere that there was a problem with some of the sensors in the catalytic converter but the thread I was reading was from 2019 and so can't believe it is still the same issue... anyone got any ideas?

I'm not new to driving, been driving manuals for over 20 years.

Try the thread in the Fabia section.

Ah, thanks. Thought I'd seen it somewhere on here but looking under wrong car. Hadn't thought just to Google search 🙄😊

I will say only 1 thing - be carefull not to burn the clutch

Thanks. I know it might sound silly but could you clarify what you mean by burn the clutch?

One thing I have found that helps is to get going in first but before fully lifting the clutch, depress it again and go into second. This is what the car seems to wants me to do anyway because if I fully lift the clutch olin first it complains and acceleration slows down. Is doing this with the clutch ok though?

you can start by lifting the foot of the pedal in 1. gear and the car will start going withot giving gas, and then to change in 2. gear

or pay more attention when to press gas pedal when starting in 1. gear

there will be less kangarooing once the egine is warm and if you press gas pedal starting in 1. gear a little bit after you have lifted your foot from the clutch pedal - it needs more time space from lifting of the cluch and pressing the gas

otherwise it is not possible to start fast from the first gear unless you want the clutch to be slipping wich will cause wear of the clutch

1.0 tsi manual is not so smooth in start-stop or bumper to bumper drive - with cars driven before with 1.0 tsi I have not experienced it, but with scala this is a problem - very long lenght of the cluch pedal doesnt help

once it is in the 2. gear ito goes like it should be

and it is from the day 1

the third gear is very good, I can drive around the city (if not stopping) in the 3. gear, but starting from the standstill is always tricky, and the vibration of the clutch pedal when releasing it is very annoying

So I've finally got there. (3 months later)

The method that seems to work pretty much all of the time is:

1. Lift clutch to bite with a little gas only

2. As you lift it further to fully lifted you need to push gas down about 2/3s of the way.

If you get the timing right this won't over rev the engine. Revs should peak about 2000 with clutch fully lifted. What I did realise is that it is a small engine driving a biggish car. It is not under powered but you do need to be unafraid of pushing the gas pedal. With timing, this doesn't over rev. I now feel happy and confident with this car ☺️
