Hi,

Car has been in garage and ive checked oil and its above the area on the dipstick where the min and max are and its on the main shaft above this by about 1cm.

Is this that big an issue (Engine doesnt seem to leak oil anywhere)?

How much extra oil would that be and should I use a pela pump to suck some out of the dipstick hole?

I would, it's unwise to overfill oil, a mil or so is ok but what you indicated I would definitely draw some out.

@Ben12345  Is that with the engine cold and not started and cold oil,

or as it should be checked once you know there is enough oil, so once the engine has been run and up to normal operating temp and sat a few minutes?

If well overfilled you need to remove the overfill.

Thanks all.

I have checked it when the engine is cold having not been driven since the day before.

I always believed this was the best time to check it? Is that correct?

I have the second dipstick in the horizontal row above (Thanks for that) and it is about 1/3rd up the dipstick outside of the indented part (A)

It is the sensible time to check it, before you start the car and drive anyplace.

But then after a journey check where the level is when hot.

Cold checks is not how you check the correct Oil Level other than with a VW Group 1.2 petrol 44 kW engine with only 2.8 litres capacity.

Read the owners manual.

The Oil Level is checked at Normal Operating Temperature after stopped a few minutes parked on the level.

That is hot oil, 90*oC or so.

The idea is you do an oil and filter service with the correct quantity of oil. Take the car for a road test and then check the oil level.

Usually though the engine is left ticking over, is not at operating temperature and is maybe over filled and maybe under filled and maybe correctly filled.

Is the car level when you check? if so, that oil level is far too high, probably by at least 1/2 litre.

I assume the car was in for an oil service, what does the manager of the garage say?
