Cold start rpms doesn't drop

Featured Replies

When I start car at -2C rpms jumps to 1000 after couple km rpms drops to 800 and that's how it should be. But some time after cold start rpms jumps to 1050 and doesn't drop even engine is hot it holds 1050 rpms until engine is shut and start again then everything is normal.

?

Are you aware of what it does when doing a regen, or is this it maybe regenning?

When doing regen rpm at 1000 and I checked with scan tool there was no regeneration. I was driving about 2h (100km) and rpm still was 1050

If you have the air con turned on, your engine may also raise the rpms in order to heat/cool the cabin faster.

I turn heater off until engine get warmer. Problem is not higher rpm but why rpm doesn't drop when engine is hot

@Mindaugas1990 Is the car still on the original battery and maybe reaching end of life?

Is there a nice fresh / clean air filter fitted and the engine is not needing to get more air?

Worth mentioning you have a DQ200 DSG as it requires looking at the picture to see.

Battery 10 months old agm and coded. Air filter 1 year old. That weird thing happening not every time and only when whether is below 0

Because it needs to.  Unless someone knows of some fault which is occuring.

?

Did you have the car last winter or longer and is this new for this season / cold weather?

Modern air filters are massively overspecified, I did 250000 miles on the original filter on my MK1 Octavia and only replaced it when it started falling apart, the mpg continued rising throughout the life of the vehicle.

When an air filter does become blocked just like a DPF the restriction is felt at high revs not tickover.

I have a couple of times noticed the 1050 rpm remaining a little longer than usual, I think its down to battery SOC and ambient conditions.

Modern Airfilters can get damp just as non modern ones do. damp / h20 freezes.  -2*oC time is freezing time.

So dead simple, check dead simple things.

..........

DQ200 DSG and a 1.6 TDI cold weather.

If the RPM is holding higher in D on tick over, what is the rpm going to when you put in S and ticking over?

What is the RPM doing in P when the engine is started, or in N with the Parking Brake on, or with the foot on the brake?

At above freezing or below freezing?

Does the higher RPM being asked about cause any issues since the car / gearbox is in D anyway?

This winter is second with this car and last winter was same thing. From cold start if rpm higher than 1k it holds in all gears same rpm

I am asking about tick over RPM.  Is that the same in D as in S.

If cold like freezing and below a DQ200 should still hold to a higher RPM before changing up.

Even with a 1.6 TDI.

(With a DQ200 it can be started in N as long as not -8*oC or colder)

Good point re damp, cold wet conditions are indeed when my tickover sometimes remains high, it could also be the Aircon controller demanding the increase in revs to dehumidify the incoming air or perhaps go through a de-icing cycle for the evaporator.

There are probably several systems that can request a higher idle speed in certain conditions, there is probably a VCDS parameter showing what they are similar to the AC shut down codes, I don't like driving looking at a computer so just accept it as a feature despite my inquisitive nature.

I have a Golf with the 1.6tdi engine - does the same - frosty morning and the tick over is always high for a hour or so.

The air con will not function at -2, somewhere at around 4 C IIRC it will not activate.

Same here, 2.0 TDI doing morning drive to work cca 13km after stop engine still at 1000 revs, speak to friend with same engine but longer ownership he told it is normal for Euro 6 engines ...

Its not the supplementary electric heater running is it? That is the only thing I have ever noticed insrease the idle apart from a regen or the air con on a very hot day.

If you go on the convenience consumer menu its pretty obvious as the 'air conditioning' (read-HVAC) bar is right across as it draws up to 80 Amps

I’ve often wondered this about my Golf - certainly it only occurs on cold mornings and decimates the MPG - the upside is warm (not hot) air within a few minutes.
