No you don't. You live in Kent, not somewhere like the edge of Kirkfield Bank, the Peak or Lake District, Snowdonia or the Scottish Highlands. I have lived in or at least visited all 6 and know what I am talking about.

Sorry I completely forgot where I live. Of course you are right. Thank you for correcting me.

The Yaris is certainly a more modest sized car and more suitable for tight urban areas.

I have a 21 year old predecessor Echo 1.3L manual which has been incredibly reliable if uninspiring.

If you are complaining about the performance of the octavias 1.2L turbo engine then you will have more complaints about the 1.3L or 1.5L Yaris.

If you are looking at an auto version then the 4 speed auto torque converter in the Yaris will kill what ever performance or economy you were hoping to achieve. The manual is far better imo.

My 1.4tsi Octavia is more economical than the Echo despite the Echo still being able to match Toyota's original consumption claims.

Is your Octavia a manual or automatic?

I am a bit surprised you find the performance on hills so poor to be honest. The turbo should cut in at low revs and provide more than enough torque. Is the turbo working properly, if not it might account for a part of your abysmal consumption?

This reply was keyed on the bus home so might be a bit disjointed.

It's manual. And I'm looking at manuals.

What interests me in a Yaris.is the fact that they are allegedly a little bit more experienced and proficient in the often start/stop driving.

Let me explain what I mean by the uphill ride struggles, as it causes some confusion.

I live at a bottom of a hill (no way to gain speed when aproaching). It's two way traffic there with cars parked on both sides. So even if you start ok, and you have to give way and start again - god almighty it takes time before I reach the top and the engine carches up.

Before Octavia I had Suzuki Alto 1.0.

That little nipper was swallowing that incline like nothing. But it was much smaller and lighter.

Also if I go to nearby towns - there are some significant 40 degrees inclines that I just hate climbing up on.

Size - also I park in a dead end road with (again) cars parked on both sides, so the only way out for me is by always reversing in narrow space dor about 2 min EVERY DAY in and out, every time I need to get out.

It's a joy killer.

I'd get the car checked out if I were you...   With that performance and mpg it sounds like something is wrong...

I had MOT and full service done 2 months ago.

What other checks would you recommend? A genuine question.

@Oct@via13 What was done at a FULL SERVICE?

Oil & Filter, Air Filter, Cabin Filter, Brake service including brake fluid change. Spark Plugs replaced, hinges greased, full inspection, road test etc etc!

the wifes 1.2 fiat 500 does a couple of miles a day and gives mid 20s ,but on a run will do mid 50s ,your cars never getting warmed up properly .

A pre EU5 diesel engined car would immediately half the OP's fuel consumption on short runs, here diesel is cheaper than petrol so an additional saving, not sure if that applies in the UK.

Unlike a petrol engine which will be running an enriched mixture (think old school choke) until it has reached operating temperature there is no enrichment on a diesel after the compression ignition cycle is sustained without preheating, so a matter of seconds.

My car is doing 44-48mpg at the one mile mark, most of my journeys are short ones to town (4km) and stop start around town, it returns 50mpg overall on those trips, the 4km out 4km return trip to my favored routier restaurant return 57mpg.

And that is with a 4wd Yeti with the frontal area and drag coefficient of a barn door.

Sadly the monetary advantages of diesel power on short journeys has been wiped out post EU4 with the particulate filters.

I am not sure what are you asking here. Do you want me to see how the usual full service checks are not corresponding to deep, deatiled, checks of a car? Or are you listing jobs that might have been done? I'm not fluent in sarcasm nor in car knowledge, so I am having hard time judging your comment, sorry (?)

@Oct@via13  Maybe i should have just asked, when were the Spark Plugs last replaced.  & not about a Full Service, which should include many things.

When was the Air Filter looked at for clean / dry, or last changed?

As far as @J.R., we used to at school get upity about things about mothers and usually it wasa wind up. Our mums were not dead.

To be completely honest - I am not too sure. I assumed when a full service is done, all sort of regular things gets checked up.

Should I take it to a garage and ask for an actual full health check?

Sorry, I honestly have little knowledge in the maintenance field, never had a car of my own for very long.

As to @J.R., I only dream that he was raised by his parent (whom I have only utmost respect for) to be a bit less ridiculing person and don't mock people just because of something he finds hard to believe.

40° is double the slope of the steepest road in the UK.

@Oct@via13  If you can not open the Air Filter box then ask someone to and see the condition of the filter,

if you do not know what servicing gets done and you pay for you need to find out.

Main Dealer Servicing can mean not much done these days.  Bottom Chart was pre 2020, not everything done then but often charged as though it was.

Sweet Jesus and Marry.... ok.

I hereby solemny swear that it was just a figure of speach and I DID NOT manually measure the incline of the hill in question nor have I googled  it up and provided only an estimatet measurement based on my fatigued perception.

I am also happy to confirm and take your correction that this hill is indeed not a 40 degree one.

I hope that helps purify the air a bit.

Thank you very much!

That's not right for any engine Octavia Mk3 - the only time I've ever had fuel economy that poor was winter city driving in my previous Audi RS4 which had a 4.2L V8 making 450PS 🤯

What I said in post 2 of this thread.

From 2017 to 2021 I lived in north Devon and drove a 1.4TSI manual Octavia combi and never had any problems with the steep hills there (the steepest I regularly used was a 1 in 3 near Lynton).

@Oct@via13 I think you need to get someone with VCDS or OBDeleven to do a diagnostic scan as your mpg and hill climbing issue really do say to me that there is a problem with your Octavia. Just because it passed the MOT and had a service done does not mean there isn't a problem.

D you reckon I should just visit an official Skoda dealership & Service in my area? There is 1 but I always feard they would try to skin me alive for some reason (huge building, lots of expensive materials, very corpo-feel)

No, I think it would be far better to find a local Briskoda member with VCDS or OBDeleven to get a fault scan done first.

Here's a link to the thread with a list of Briskoda members with VCDS List of VCDS Owners

Or, (if not Brisky member)  ........  trusted / recommended independent garages are better than official dealerships IMO. Same reasoning as your fears.........

At best they can be ridiculously expensive.

I'd be checking air filter and spark plugs plus boost hoses for leaks etc, followed by a check for binding brakes for starters.  I'd then try and get a full vcds or similar scan done.

@Oct@via13

An accurate last annual mileage would be good, maybe look at your last mot .......

By my reckoning, £50 monthly / £600 annually at £1.33 per litre equates to about 100 Gallons.

If you have actually done close to 3000 miles then that's close to an average 30 mpg. ... If my sums are correct, Lol. I hope so.

Maybe worth checking in a bit more detail rather than just using your car's onboard information.

I have looked at this as I thought mine was actually worse than it is ... I was working on that I get 5 miles to £1 but got sums mixed up after that.
