Turbo switches off after higher revs. driving

Featured Replies

Hi Guys, help me please,

I have a 1.9 TDI octy 2001 Elegance with 116k genuine. Dealer serviced from new, when it was my company car, but now I own it privately. My problem is that if I accelerate to approx 4000revs, the turbo appears to switch off for all subsequent use, until I stop the engine. After the engine stop the turbo works normally.

No dash warning lights have ever appeared to indicate an ECU fault. This problem has only just developed, but if I do not accelerate beyond 3500 revs. everything operates normally. Has anyone any suggestions please as to the possible cause/s?.

One other request, what type of wheel bearings are fitted to the front and are they renewable by a home mech. or do you require a 30tonne press?

Thanks

Ray

PS The engine fault does appear common as a doctor friend has a Fabia D 52k on a 52plate with a similar fault.

Overboost due to a sticky turbo i'd think on those symptoms.

Have a search about for sticking VNT turbo, lots on it inc how to strip the turbo down and clean it up.

Thanks for this, you may well be right, having delved further into the FORUM listing other owners problems. May well have a go at a turbo strip down, will let you know of outcome.

Definitely sticking turbo vanes. If you've got 4-5 hrs and a Haynes manual it's a job worth doing yourself as it will save a fortune. The biggest pain is the pipe to the IC from the turbo, removing it takes seconds, putting it back took 45 minutes cut hands etc.

If you have problems with the circular spring clips that fix the air hoses, try using mole grips to fully open it and attach a thick cable tie (extra par of hands needed) to prevent it spring back when you remove the grips. This will allow you to put it in place without having to use the mole grips. Once in place just cut the cable tie.

If I remember correctly the bolts on the inlet manifold are 6mm allen key, thought I
